Okay guys, new to the forum. I have a very complicated scenario so bear with me while I explain. Several years ago I inherited a 1973 CJ5 from my papa (still around but he passed it down to me). Long story short, the tub is now garbage. Rusted out, crushed by a barn, it's had it. Anyway I decided to take the plunge and remove the entire body. As it sits now, it's a complete and running rolling chassis (ran and drove prior to the barn incident ). Anyway, have had a helluva time looking for a 72-75 tub in Florida. I've called every number I could find with no success. However, I did find a 71 CJ5 a half hour away. Have yet to lay eyes on it, but he claims it's cancer free and ran in 2012 ( Dauntless Buick 225 V6 v6). No brakes. He'll part with it for $1000 plus tax.
My plan was to go take a look at it (I work 5 minutes from where it's located) and buy it if it ran and/or the body is in fact solid. My plan was initially to keep it complete if it runs, but an idea crossed my mind: swap tubs. The 73 means a lot to me since it was my grandpa's. I am aware that the front clip is longer on the 73, but it is not a concern I have since late fenders and hoods will fit (the original grille is good so I saved it). I know that the body mounts will line up, just the 73 frame has unneeded mounting locations for the 71 body. Considering it's a 71, there's a chance it has a rear tank instead of underseat. If not, no big deal. My main concern is the pedal assembly. 73 jeeps have "suspended" pedals as opposed to the "through-the-floor" pedals in the 71. Which means the master is frame mounted instead of the firewall-mounted unit i need. I have the 73 pedal assembly, and the (bad) original master. Is there a relatively easy way to relocate the master cylinder on the 71 tub? If so, then the 71 tub will be going on my 73, which runs and drives like a top, as well as having sentimental value to me. Any help is greatly appreciated.
