I have a 1973 CJ5 . I haven’t had any luck finding the older style tops or doors in my area. I did find a couple 76 and newer style tops and doors near me. I am wondering if I can swap a 76 or newer style windshield frame on my Cj to make the newer style top and doors fit.
Yes, that is a popular mod for 72-75 CJs. You will also have to do a wiper motor wiring modification as your CJs wiper motor is on the outside of the frame but the 76 and up is on the inside.
So I’m guessing the windshields are the same width from one side to the other. What brackets or hardware would I need to mount the new windshield frame and what mounts and hardware would I need for the newer style doors to mount up?
I was adding more information when you replied. The hold downs are different and you would need to modify the mounting hardware. It's not really hard but depends on your skill level. Though I have to admit, most of us CJ owners are used to modifying parts to fit our CJs (especially 1972-1975). See below.
