1976 CJ-5 all Original 44,000 miles. Lots of fun! Really enjoy gravel roading here in the Ozarks. Flat Nasty off road Park is my new hobby. My CJ5 makes life fun. Lately the Jeep has been my 4whlr at work it's a tank
Was wondering is there anything I can do to make shifting in and out and out of 4 wheel drive
easier. It always comes out but it takes alot of muscle. I'm new to this forum. My Jeep is all original and a lot of fun!

Well....in a nut shell it will be pretty hard to shift if your running gear is in a bind or loaded still. This would come from something like being in 4wd thru a turn which puts lots of load on the diffs and axles as 4 wheels try to spin differently thru the turn or one was slipping or spinning. Then directly after coming out of this scenario trying to get back to 2wd. To ease this bind get yourself in a straight line on firmer ground and move forward some to "unload" things. Put a little pressure on the T case shifter the way you wanna shift and if its still real firm try rolling backward just a tad and see how that does. Also make sure your T case is good on lube and the linkage isnt damaged.

Post a picture. My first Jeep was a 1976 CJ5 . Bought it brand new in 76. Orange with a white soft top. I think it had a 4 banger in it, was a long time ago. I remember using my clutch to help shift in and out of 4 wheel drive. Just a little nudge forward or backward just as I pushed the shift lever. Have fun. Rod

I find it sometimes helps to put the tranny in reverse and give it a quick hard punch to the gas then off. This works best on loose terrain rather than asphalt. Make sure no one crept up behind you before you do it though.

Going out on another run today to flat nasty and overall woods adventure. Going to use your advice. I'll get some good pictures. My Jeep was red originally with a white top, now white. Going to get it painted soon shooting for purple. That's the color of our first Jeep a 70 CJ5 as a kid. Need to lift mine a bit and get bigger tires just to increase the places I can go.. thanks
