1976 CJ5 258 i6, T4, 4" lift
Hey guys - I'm a newb, just bought my 76 CJ5 (AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l i6) a couple weeks ago - have loved getting some roading in, never done it in my life.

Yesterday, I finished doing all the under the hood stuff that needed to be done to this beast, and decided to install some cup holders...big mistake.

The PO had installed a toggle light switch on the bottom lip of the dash, just to the right of the wiper knob, that links to a light on the passenger side dash (replacing the old cigarette lighter apparently). I decided to put my cup holder in this area, and as I was turning the wrench sparks flew. I realized I had hit one or more of the wires going to this switch, but, seeing that it was a light switch I didn't think it was a big deal.

Long story short, now when I go to crank, all the accessories light up (even the dash light) tach, speedo, oil pressure, voltage, etc. and all electrical systems light up ---- aside from the starter.

The old starter motor sounded crappy, so I replaced that. From reading on this site, I thought perhaps the starter solenoid was fried, replaced that. Even replaced the wire that goes to the "S" terminal on the solenoid. Didn't work.

Went and bought a new ignition switch, thought maybe I shorted that. Installed...nothing happening still. Replaced all fuses, checked all of said electrical components mentioned above, only thing that isn't lighting up is the "S" terminal side components (alternator cables and positive lead ARE getting power) AND...which I think may be my next culprit to investigate, all cables on the ignition control module except the yellow (I assume main power) will not light up.

Needless to say, I've put in about 2 weeks of 8-10 hour days on this guy, and to have it all fixed up yesterday just to have this silly situation arise from a freaking cup holder is quite frustrating.

Anyone have any ideas on what I'm missing out on? I can pull wrenches all day but electrical is just not my thing.

Cheers!

Also, forgot to mention, I can get the CJ to start by bypassing the solenoid (the old post to post needle nose trick)

did you check the igntion switch on the column? not the key switch. just asking cause the p.o. on my cj told me the key switch was bad and it was the igntion switch.

Yeah, just to be safe, bought a brand new one and installed it yesterday. Picking up a new ignition control module from NAPA in about 30 mins to see if that could have been the problem as well...honestly have no clue what's wrong.

Not sure how to check it...when i put my tester light on it nothing happens. Attached a picture to show what it looks like as of right now. Guy at NAPA suggested I replace the top portion of it, that's why it's crimped together like that. Attached to the "S" post of the solenoid.

So, just traced back the wire on the "S" post of the solenoid, from solenoid: ignition cylinder to firewall wiring harness, under dash, and then is hooked into the suspect light toggle switch that I bumped leading to this predicament.

For some reason I don't think this is the right place to have the wire running to...

Also, light blue wire has current under the dash, but once I get under the hood, it shows no power...

There should be a fusible link at the starter solenoids positive lead to the ignition switch. Would be a thick red wire 10-12 gauge. The other big post runs to the starter.
