1976 CJ5 Starter Electrical Help!?
Hey guys - I'm a newb, just bought my 76 CJ5 (AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l i6) a couple weeks ago - have loved getting some roading in, never done it in my life.
Yesterday, I finished doing all the under the hood stuff that needed to be done to this beast, and decided to install some cup holders...big mistake.
The PO had installed a toggle light switch on the bottom lip of the dash, just to the right of the wiper knob, that links to a light on the passenger side dash (replacing the old cigarette lighter apparently). I decided to put my cup holder in this area, and as I was turning the wrench sparks flew. I realized I had hit one or more of the wires going to this switch, but, seeing that it was a light switch I didn't think it was a big deal.
Long story short, now when I go to crank, all the accessories light up (even the dash light) tach, speedo, oil pressure, voltage, etc. and all electrical systems light up ---- aside from the starter.
The old starter motor sounded crappy, so I replaced that. From reading on this site, I thought perhaps the starter solenoid was fried, replaced that. Even replaced the wire that goes to the "S" terminal on the solenoid. Didn't work.
Went and bought a new ignition switch, thought maybe I shorted that. Installed...nothing happening still. Replaced all fuses, checked all of said electrical components mentioned above, only thing that isn't lighting up is the "S" terminal side components (alternator cables and positive lead ARE getting power) AND...which I think may be my next culprit to investigate, all cables on the ignition control module except the yellow (I assume main power) will not light up.
Needless to say, I've put in about 2 weeks of 8-10 hour days on this guy, and to have it all fixed up yesterday just to have this silly situation arise from a freaking cup holder is quite frustrating.
Anyone have any ideas on what I'm missing out on? I can pull wrenches all day but electrical is just not my thing.
Cheers!
