I have recently acquired a 1980 CJ5 , It has a six in it and a 4 speed tranmission. How do I determine the engine type and size as well as the type of Transmission ? It need some work but I need to know what engine and Transmission it has before any parts are ordered. It needs an inspection plate cover on the bellhousing, and other small misc. items as well as all the bushings replaces.

Congrats on your CJ5 !

Your engine is definitely the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , Inline-6, 258ci. This was Jeep's staple 6cyl.

The 4spd Transmission could be either the T-176 or the SR4 . The best way to tell which is to look at how it bolts to the bellhousing. If the front of the Transmission housing has a butterfly wing shape then it is the stronger T-176 . If the front is more square then it is the weaker SR4 .

Here is a good site for Transmission info. Novak-Adapers
