I was thinking about upgrading to a 21 gallon fuel tank. But, I am worried that it will hang too low, and possibly hang up, when off road, thoughts?

Sold on JC Whitney... That extra 6 gallons would come in handy, right?

definitely just dont know about the dimensions, im sure someone will chime in that has gone down this road.

I have two five gallon cans on the back that have never had fuel in them. If you are going to drive cross country I guess it would be cool but I would rather take a whoopin than drive the CJ more than a couple hundred miles. 15 gal.s works fine for me.:D

Less weight more clearance.

You definitely have a point there. CJs are definitely not road trip vehicles. I would still like to explore the option.

Yes, The larger tank will hang down more. But, If you use more than 15 gallons in a day when you're wheeling you must be hard on the skinny pedal. I can go three days on 10 gallons. But then i'm easy on it. And i don't like to break stuff cause i have to repair it myself. If you have a body lift, You can build a new top strap and tuck the tank up in a little further

I also use my Jeep as a daily driver, not a lot of miles, but I will occasionally go on short road trips in it...

I've thought about it as I'm really close to empty after a full day of wheel'n.
But having the tank hang down 5" farther really turned me off as my gas tank skid plate takes a beating now.
Here's the place I was looking at them. http://www.mtscompany.com/jeep.htm

I added a 21 gal tank for the extra range . Allows more room for other essentials for a 4-5 day backcountry desert trip. It does hang down about 3" lower than the stock tank though, so you must choose your lines wisely ;)

I think I could deal with 3". I am definitely going to put this on the "to do" list.

My thoughts have been along the lines of setting the 5 gal cans up with outboard motor fittings and hoses. this pulls 10 gal.s directly from the cans into the fuel line through a switching valve. I get to use the gas in the cans first with enough in the tank to retrace my trip with 5 gal to spare. When I don't need it, it goes away. Or an Oklahoma credit card to transfer the fuel from the cans to the tank would be much easier, just not as cool.

Custom made by TrailQuest a long time ago. 20+ gallon capacity, heavy gauge steel, with an additional heavy diamond plate skid on the bottom. I does hang lower than a stock CJ tank would, but I'm not crawling big rocks.

thats a nice job, love the fuel lines.

Here's my 2 cents- I bought and installed a new 21 gallon tank on my 83' CJ7 . It does sit a little lower and wider. However it is above the axle. I have found that it makes a huge difference! I don't have to worry about bringing xtra gas along, even with the gas guzzling mods I made! I hope your gas gauge works cause mine is forever stuck on 1/2. I just don't worry like I used to. Good luck!

Sending unit and gauge replacement in your future? Doing mine next week..

There's an OEM 20 gallon poly tank that was an option on later CJ's. They have a fully enclosed skid plate and are wider than the 15 gallon tank. If you want a 20 gal you would be best off getting a custom tank like the one pictured above, or finding a 20 gal OEM tank and using it. The 20-21 gallon tanks that use the 15 gal skidplate will hang down a lot more as they aren't as wide, just taller.

Update... The 20 gal, OE tank is the way to go. Doesn't hang low at all.
