So my new jeep (to me new jeep):D i was checking the axles out i saw on the tags on the diffs said it said 3.88. Is that right could it have 3.88 gears in it?

I'm not an expert but that sounds like a wierd ratio for a jeep, does it have original axles or something differant under it. Like I said I'm not an expert but that sounds like you have an upgraded alxe or something differant then original jeep axles.:dunno: Hopefully someone with more knowelege can chime in. The sure way to check is to take the cover off and count the teeth on the ring and pinion and divide the ring by the pinion. :)

What axles do you have in it? Looking at a factory gearing chart I'm not seeing any axles that would have come from the factory that had a 3.88 option the AMC20 NT/WT was available in 2.73, 3.31, 3.54, 3.73, and 4.10 the Dana 44 was available from 2.87-3.73 and 3.92-5.89.

That's not a ratio that I've seen on any axle before. It won't be in your stock CJ axles. The Dana 44 skips from 3.73 to 3.92. I know the Dana 30 has 3.73 but I think the next one up from there is 4.10. The AMC20 also skips from 3.73 to 4.10.

3.88 gears would give you some strange teeth counts. You'd need something like a 35/9 or a 62/16 to get those numbers.

I should have put what I have Its a 1986 CJ7 with stock axles, Dana 30 in front and Dana 44 in rear. Bought it from original owner. So have all recipes on what's been done to it.

Are you sure you read that correctly? Could it be 3.08 instead?

Not sure ill have to look again.

That would make a lot of sense. It wouldn't be hard to mistake a 0 for an 8 on a tag. And that's one of the ratios that would have come with the T-5 .

ok 43 teeth on the ring gear and 13 on pinion that comes out to 3.307 so it has 3.31 gears in it. not sure why my tag has 3.88 on it.

Lots can happen in 25+ years and multiple owners....... Who knows if someone swapped axles or parts at one time or not.

So been looking through all the paper work on this jeep i got from the original owner i see he took it to a six states and had the axles gone through. The number on the repair order was 388 im thinking thats why it had those numbers on the tag.
