stocker thats ready to build!!!
i wana go big i trimed back the fendersa to make plenty of clearance can my stock axles spin the 35s???? what type of gearing should i set up with 35s or should i just go with 33 on the stock axles then what gearing ??? how big is to big of a tire size for stock specs??? and what would i have to upgrade to first to run bigger tires. 1975 CJ5 AMC 232 i6 stock

oh and backspacing on the wheels what should that be as well????

thanks for any info :D

When you say stock, are saying completely stock? If you still have the 2 piece axles, anything will break them, eventually. If you have the 1 pice axles, you should be ok with 35's, provided you limit your skinny pedal activity. Backspacing I can't answer, but I think it deals with how wide of a tired you are choosing.

ok so one piece axles:cool: whats the best brands/makes/models to buy and what to stay away from??? pretty much what will work and what to get!!!

I have 35s on my CJ5 and I have a setup much like what CheepJeep85 recommends: 4.88 gears and 1 piece axles.
i'd say moser is the best 1pc kit. 4.88 gears are as low as you can go which is what i would use with 35s. what rear axle do you have a Dana 44 or AMC20 ?
They work great with plenty of fender cutting. Not sure if you care for that.

At first it may look like I got carried away cutting the front fender. Actually, I still rub slightly.
Look at my avatar on the left and you can see how my tire uses all that space.

I'd agree with everyone else so far, but I'd add this: that AMC 232 i6 6 cylinder will die a quick death with big tires. Look into installing a AMC 304 or 360. Or if you really wanna go bog, go 401!

I personally like 33's on a CJ it's the perfect tire for me and no trimming needed.
I ran 33x14.50x15 Super Swamper TSL's with no issues.
I'd recommend a 35x12.50 no wider, if you go that big.

As far a back spacing check this out.

why do you say this. its basically the same engine as a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . people use them alot with 35s and much bigger, as long as the gearing is right. i mean look at all the yjs and tjs running around with 35s+ with the 4.0, which isn't all that different from the AMC 232 i6 /AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . sorry man but that statement just isn't true.

If you go 35's with 4:88's you'll be good.
Just remember you are pushing your drivetrains limit, so easy on the skinny peddle.

OK not to argue with ya, but your comparing a 36 year old engine to ones very much younger and with different technology.
My assessment may be a little harsh, but its not far from the truth, IMO.
BTW, I had a AMC 232 i6 in a DJ. Put 33s on it and it lasted almost a year before the engine gave out. Same thing. Old engine, big tires. Had 4.10s and an auto Transmission , at that.

you guys are awesome hey on this site keep the great info comming i like the big look so if the 33-14.5 will work without rubbing that should work for me and i trimmed the hell out of it i kinda when overboad but i like that look so front and rear shackles and a 2.5 add a leaf trimed out and then the drive train will get some work the motor purrrs and is so easy to work on i'll keep it :D. gears i would like to lock it front and rear andf iv read about welding them hows that work??? i dont plan on driving it on the road it only has a ORV title anyway and the way its trimed and driven its a wheeler:cool:!!!! i like to crawl over stuff light mudd and the hillz are a blast one thing im finding to be a pain is the 3 speed i almost wish i had a auto Transmission it seems that creepin/crawlin the rocks would be easer??? once the gears go lower it should be better.....creeper creeper in the making!!! thanks again for all the great info

If you like crawln in the rocks I would go with 35's. That extra ground clearance can mean a lot. I know it's only an inch but that can be a lot.

You can weld the rear but I wouldn't weld the front. I would buy lockers front and rear myself, but some people like to weld them.

Your right autos are nice, I love mine.

If you trimmed the 2.5 should fit the 35's. My 33's was on a 4" superlift no trimming.
I'd have rather had the 12.50 vs the 14.50, but the jeep came with them so I ran it.

so i read about the axle up grades for what im working with and man theres a lot to up grade....first i got the jeep running great. then i trimed it up. small lift is on the way then go the tires and....im stayin whit the 33s just cuz the $$$$ issues if i put 35s i wont have the funds to up grade all the other stuff at this time like lockers and axle shafts!!! i wana romp!!!:D so where i roll im gona have to get by theres not many rock gardens to play in more like woodpiles lol and its all about the challange for me so i'll play with the basic set-up and hit the trails and off road parks to push the limits of what i got!!! then that will send me in the right direction on whats next...looks like im gona have to break sumin to get on track not my plan but hey $$$$ rules everything and when the time comes it will be on until then all of you have been a big help thanks for the advice and i'll keep the posts coming maybe i'll get my two cents in there one day until then i'll keep reading and rompin,D:chug:
