36's on a CJ5

i just picked up a set of 36x12.5's for 50 bucks there worn but still plenty worthy for the mudd/trail... so im workin with a shackle lift in the rear an stock up front an a whole lot of fender trimmin... like barly any fender left... it looks like the front fenders are gona have to be completly hacked off or trimed to the max the rear is gona rub im sure has anyone tried to cram big tires with no lift ???? if so what sizes and what lift worked for max size and remember i have a shoot tub so alittle trim trim is no problem for me...

Your biggest problem is not just the fenders but the frame. That is one big ol tire to shove under a CJ with no lift. You are gonna rub the frame big time...

the frame and even the springs huh im gona try to lift it alittle at a time maybe start with some shackles up front with a add a leaf for now,im planning for the Rocky Road CJ conversion to YJ springs that conversion is said to give about 1.5 of lift i was planing on 2.5 YJ leafs and maybe 1in shackles that should clear 35-36???? im thinkin it should that would be about 4in or so and all that triming....for now until i get the $$$$ together for the good stuff i wana play and experment so for now i was thinkin cheap and big lol i dont know if that a good thing but its jeepin for me as for the frame even with the right wheel space it would prolly rub hun...
so save money and get a lift lol and here i coulda had 50 more bucks saved twards the lift awww at lest i got some TSL's taking up some room in the shed that put a smile on my face lol thanks for the reply im on a mission

Here is my CJ5 with the 38" tires on it. I have a bunch of lift, and my biggest problem was when I turned to the right, the right front tire would hit the header and push the old exhaust into the rear tire. Didn't notice that until I got to a friends house that night...LOL. Good thing he lived just a few miles away.
As for you, I'd say at least 4" of lift will be needed to clear the 36" tires, with a lot of cutting involved. I have about six inches of lift on mine, and had to do a lot of trimming to clear the 35" Swampers I run.

Have you concidered what will happen with your gearing? If you think(and I am assuming here) that you are underpowered now just wait till you try and move that CJ around with the AMC 232 i6 and stock gearing.

I just went from 35x12.5-R15 radials to 36x12.5-15 Bias Ply SuperSwampers. On paper the new tires are a little taller but in reality the biggest issue was the width. The bias ply tires bulge out much more. I had to get 1.25" tire spacers.
I have about a 5 inch lift and I still did a lot of fender cutting.
What gearing do you have? I have 4.88 and that's about right.

for what im gona do with the jeep 33's would be jus fine and thats where i'll prolly end up when the right deal comes around, and if triming and a easy lift like shackles or add a leaf wont work (like 1-2in) then i'll keep the beet down 32's on for now an wheel . for 50 bucks for some 36x12.5-15 they'll fit my rims i had to get em... i also love craigslist i tend to get into trouble with craigslist sometimes lol no hunny i didnt buy those on craigslist so i was thinkin the gearing was gona be off i was gona mess with it to see if four low would push it in low gears jus to play around in the back yard... so if i get a good set of 33's what gearing should i go with and how bad would 33's be on the stock set-up....it all has to be up-graded in the end just slowly but surely as money comes in thanks for the replys

I would hate to see someone butcher the body for a set of $50 tires that they didn't have the drive train to push and that, with a cheap shackle kit, would make the rig too unstable to drive.
Of course thats just me, it's your Jeep, you can fill it with horse manure and plant roses in it if you want.

ahh yeah i cut the fenders... yep i did it to the great all might 1975 CJ5 got hacked all to high just to piss of all those old jeep guys who think that its wrong....lol bad tub all around and that mean trim trim cut cut open those fenders smash smash romp romp break work fix it ya da ya da yad and watch the mud fly lmfao lmfao....i dont beleive in full resto's on the jeeps unless u drive it like a girl :driving:i beat my jeep so thats why i dont need it pretty and im a poor white boy so thats why im happy about some 50 tires that i knew prolly wouldnt fit....sure shackle suck but im roll through the mud not the baja 50000000000000 lol

the great thing about wheelin is u can be cheap and have FUN and break and learn
as long as u got good ppl sending u the right info and u dont get hurt bad (lol) you'll end up with a sweet rig in the end...and for some its yrs
