84 CJ7 , 360 auto. What is the sequence for putting it in 4WD? Do I turn the hubs, start up, leave it in park and put in 4WD? Same with going back to 2WD? This is my first Jeep.

Yeah, you put in neutral, parking brake, turn the hubs from free to lock, get back in, put in gear, then move the second shifter to 4wd. Some times you have to move forward just a bit for it to move out of 2wd to natural. Just reverse sequence to go back to 2wd.

If you are going from 2wd to 4wd high you can do it at any time even moving as long as the hubs are locked. You can lock the hubs and drive around all the time it will not matter. But to go from 2wd to 4wd low you have to be stopped and you will need to put it in neutral and wait till everything stops spinning and then shift to 4lo.

I sometimes have to turn the engine off because though the Transmission is in neutral, it will still spin the output due to fluid drag. No special procedure for doing the hubs.

I first try in park but that won't always work so I do as csuengr said.
Thats for high to low.

If I'm going from 2 high to 4 high I do it on the fly.
Often you can go from low to high by kicking it in N as long as you are only going a couple mph.

The owner's manual for my '86 calls out to shift the Transmission into neutral and go into either range on the Transfer Case at 2-3 mph, and it does not specify auto or stick. I have had no problem with shift into high 4wd on the fly while in gear. I always forget to shift at a slow roll though and at a stop it is a real pain. I do think it is a bit easier with a twin stick.
