I have a Dana 20 , and hate it! I have a LT1 engine with 400hp. I have a new GM Turbo 400 Automatic Transmission with a B and M shifter. Rebuilt Posi Rear. Warn manual locking front hubs. Hope that is enough info:

Issue with 20, PITA to find the correct position for wheel drive options, same in getting it back to 2 wheel high. 4 wheel high tachs out at about 25 MPH, is that normal?, 4wd Low tachs out at about 15 MPH, going by memory from a long time ago so they are guesses.
Point being I would like to have AWD. Especially with all the torque I am pushing. I can spin my 33 inch wheels on drive pavement. New issue I am having is my rear is twisting. Could be the leaf springs but it is a little scarry. After I let up on the gas the rear straightens outs and the whole rear does an alignment kick which throws the back into a mini fishtail. It's not a huge fish tail just a few inches but when your doing 60 it's a bit scary when you have oncoming traffic. Could be that the traction bar, looks like a dragster wheelie Bar, is welded to the rear axle on the pass side of the axel(close to the hub) and is float bolted to the pass side frame? Maybe I need one on the other, but there is no room due to the exhaust... But this is a new issue so I pretty sure that it is my rear leaf springs, I can see where they have started rusting and are coming apart and are not in alignment.... Frigin Jersery Rust - another topic...

Anyway I see my solution as having full time awd. My Subaru has it and is better in the snow than the jeep...
Questions
1 How hard is it to due this? I am a good mechanic but tranny stuff is not my bag baby... But if there is a guide I can follow it.
2 should I use Borg Warner 1305 / 1339 QuadraTrac Transfer Case or a newer version of the QuadraTrac
3 or is there something better that is made by someone other than jeep?
4 is it strong, I read it can handle 500 hp some where?
5 is their someone in the NJ Metro area that can do this right, the first time?

Sorry for the long post but this is something I want done perfect! I put a lot of time and money in this baby and I want it to be show quality when I am done.

I have a second topic I am posting on Front clip/body modifications.... Frigin Jersey Rust

Thank you
Chuck

4w high on a Dana 20 is 1 to 1 1:1, what ever you speed in 2wd should be the same in 4wd high. You need to adjust your shift linkages or your rail pills are not correct

3rd, CJ's are not ment to be driven in 4wd until it's needed. Throwing a late model engine / Transmission in a CJ does not add 40 years of evelution to be Transmission formed into a late model vehicle.

TRACTION BAR? Don't know what you are talking about so without pics we cannot comment.

What was the condition of the CJ when you bought it? Who did all these mods?

:ww::dbanana::banana:

Leaving it in 4WD on the street, will destroy your driveline.
BTW: That model 20 real axle, if your are still run'n the OEM 2-piece axle shafts won't last long?
What R&P ratio are you run'n and what size tires?

Lose the traction bar, and go spring under.
Twin stick the 20
Throw both stick all the way forward, lock both front hubs, and have at it!
Buy extra u-joints for the front end, and brace the steering box amoung other parts, you will need them.

The stock shifter linkage is worn and sloppy. A twin stick will fix the shifting issues.

What exactly do you mean it "tachs out" (like in what gear and what rpm)? As mentioned, 4 hi is 1:1 just like 2hi. Your rpm with be the same at the same speed in 4hi and 2hi. Low range is 2:1 so you're rpms will be twice as high at the same speed (compared to 4hi or 2hi).

The 70 model QuadraTrac uses an offset rear output, so you would have to change your rear axle to match. Also, they were only available behind the AMC version of the GM Turbo 400 , and I'm not sure if they can be adapted to another Transmission .
