Folks, got a question for those in the know. A friend is looking at a 76 CJ5 , and says its pretty darn clean, but it doesnt have a hard top and he wants one. How hard will it be to find one? I seem to remember reading a thread on this board about changes made to the 5's in 75-76, or will any year top fit a 76?

IMHO-You have a better chance at win'n the lotto.
Those that do hav'em, know they have 'gold' and price as such.

Found a clean top off of a 79, but still not sure if it will fit ;)

Well Im sure you tried to talk him into a CJ8 already so that's not an option. :) If he really wants a hardtop he's bet off looking for a CJ7 . Most of the older CJ5 tops are metal , loud and would need some fabrication to fit later models. I know that windshield frames and angles changed a few times. The Tops I've seen on the 76 and up Cj5s are fiberglass Acme tops. I've only seen one in person and a handful on line.

that is actually a pretty good price. I payed two grand for my tank top way back in 79. this one looks pretty good at first glance.:D

Thanks guys, thats what I needed! The top I found is for $500 OBO and in perfect shape too (according to the seller)

I've forwarded the info to my friend, balls in his court now ;)

In 1976 the Windshield angle and the shape of the frame changed........an early 5 prior to 75 will not fit correctly nor will a later one fit an earlier CJ correctly. 1976 and later Tops are more easily found than the early versions.........The only aftermarket Fiberglass top is the Acme...........the early versions are more rare than the later ones.
Guys still get these tops and doors mixed up in that CJ era..........as I have seen plenty advertising them as either a early or later top and they are neither.......If you can see it in person still mounted and verify the vehicle year that is the best way , although guys have been swapping windshield frames for years also!
