77 Cj7 258 straight six problems
A timing light would answer the question of a stretched or jumped timing chain. Inexpensive and easy to use. The causes could be endless. Were there any other symptoms besides running good one day and not the next? Would love to help but need a starting point.

Ahh, the crank has a gear on it. So does the cam. Both are connected by the timing CHAIN. Not any belt. Under the timing chain cover in front of the engine block.

I think he was talking about the drive belt...at least thats what I interpreted from this:

he told me to check the timing by moving the fan to see if harmonic balancer was moving in synch with everything else and i tryed doing that and my belt wouldnt move the fan moved but the belt just stayed there ?

No disrespect but I am kinda lost on just what the question is now.
