1979 CJ5, 304, completely rebuilding it.
So I did a long write up before on this build, but it never got posted, so I will give the short and sweet of what is transpiring:

Bought a '79 CJ5 with the AMC 304 about 3 weeks ago.

needed plugs, wires, carb rebuild, and then it was running.

From there I needed a new gear box, steering shaft, tie rod, tube and ends (pretty much replace everything that has to do with steering.

That all went in on Friday night. Saturday started the brakes (new master cylinder and all new SS lines. Those are a PITA. Ended up breaking off the electrical unit off the proportioning valve so I will probably be ordering a new one (ugh) and replacing the one thats on there since I am sure it wont function right. Can't even bleed since one of the brake cylinders is so rusted I cant bleed from it. May just hold off until I get new valve since I will have to bleed again anyway.

I will keep this updates as I go

Good Luck Man! I will keep track of your build as I update my build Thread (1976 CJ7 Resto Project).

Take care,
Mike:chug:

Thanks to Pete it will have a drive shaft soon! I took te weekend off to come down to Nashville for a little r&r. Will be hitting it again next week. Hope to get her running and figure out the brakes next week!

Received the drive shaft, thanks Pete.

had to replace both rear wheel cylinders and when my buddy was screwing the last bake line into the last one, he stripped the fitting . Now its time to go get a double flare (loaned mine out and who knows where it is now) and a new fitting and fix that tonight.

I am looking for the mount/bushing from the frame to the grill as I need that to get this thing back running.

Also snapped the (I believe this is what its called) stabilizer bolt from belly pan to tranny mount. Need to order those, however need to figure out if it is still stuck in the mount. Once I can get the pan back on I will put the drive shaft on and see if this thing moves!

Still to do:
Everything (SEEMS LIKE)
finish brake system
tons of rewiring and wire clean up
fuel system (drop tank, clean everything out, replace bad lines)
Tune carb
lots of grinding, welding, frame repair, body repair, yadda yadda yadda.

Thinking next winter if this thing is actually in decent shape I will probably drop the cash and go propane. Not sure yet

Got some grinding done today. Brake line double flare tool won't do SS so I have to take it and have it flared tomorrow so I can finish brakes. Doing home made heater hoses since spending 100 on them isn't an option. Had to cut off tranny stabilizer bolt so waiting for that to get here too. Not much else to report until I get all the parts I ordered in. Hopefully I can make it drive by Tuesday.

Sometimes you jsut have to keep at whatever part of it you can when you have time and parts. When i run out of parts, I move on to interior or body or frame, or welding and cleaning. Just keeping busy will get you to move forward.

That does look good!:notworthy:

I like to walk out to the barn while drinking a beer with a full one handy and think about all the work I could be doing. Then I just wind up getting more beer and thinking some more...:D:chug:

 I don't think you can build it with your mind you may have to get your hands dirty.

well my first thought would be....a rear end. Next thought a rear end in bad need of cleaning and fresh fluid. BTW is the green your final color? also is that undercoating under the hood?

That's FRONT end gears. Better lunch next time.

Next prize given in 24 hours if you can tell me why they are!!!

tell you; why they are? WELLLLL in a four wheel drive vehicle you have TWO differentials. One is in the rear and the other is FRONT. That's how it's been on jeeps since 1941 or so.
