Build Thread '79 "Crayola" Scrap Pile Build

Build Thread '79 "Crayola" Scrap Pile Build
I have the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , but I was all in at the machine shop for $958 for my long block almost complete. I took it home an torqued everything over again including the head. Came with 12month/12K warranty.

I guess you could figure it by the cylinder at $159. This would translate to $1,200 for an 8cyl using this logic. I did buy new rocker arms, push rods, retainer brackets, blah blah yesterday for an additional $100ish. Doesn't sound too bad with what you have mentioned and you might get another 30years out of it.:chug:

So the rebuild comes with: camshaft, gring and polish crank, pistons, bore 30 over, rings, retainers, rod bearings, main bearing, clean out, full gasket set (I get the rest to put top end together), oil pump, gears, chain. I think that's it. Not sure.

Sent from my probably outdated electronic device, more than likely tracked by our government.

Thats not a bad price if the core was good. Mine looked pretty rough, but it is proof that a turd can shine with new paint and shiny new parts!

If it starts after I get it in, I will be doing the to-be-determined happy dance.:chug:

I'm probably going to go with the hopes and dreams and get it done. Its a complete rebuild using current crank and rods. Everything else new.

I'd start by checking the local tranny shops. If they don't have it, they might be able to order it. You could also get a roll of gasket material and a small ball peen hammer and make them.

Thought about that as well. No one seems to have them and it's the only thing stopping me from putting tranny to motor and into jeep!!

looks like Arts ans Crafts time. :D

Made my gaskets and blah blah blah. Sorry for lack of update but been slow with the tranny. I am stuck trying to get the tranny back onto the engine. When I start tightening the bell to the block te clutch fork binds up every time. The pressure plate is actually slimmer than stock, but every time I start to tighten, the fork just locks up. Is there a secret I am missing? Am I not holding my tongue the correct way? Stand on one foot? I have tried about 10 times, taken everything off to make sure it was all on correctly and still binds every time. Fork is same size as stock one, throw out is same as stock. It's a LuK kit and I am beyond frustrated. Any tips?

Well after I got the tranny on I realized I missed the skinny gasket between the bell and tranny... The little things that make you very angry. Gotta pull the whole thing and take it back apart. And that little spring for the fork return is a PITA

I did the same dang thing the other day when putting my engine and tranny together. Pull back apart, take the :censored: flywheel and clutch back off, then I could get the metal piece back in that goes between the bellhousing and engine. Then it all went back together again. Worked fast and it only took me like three hours!

This was the day after I realized the rear wheel brake cylinders were installed on the wrong wheels. Boxes marked wrong from parts store and they were still on the respective sides of the jeep they were installed on.:censored: Another two hours to get back to where I was before I started.

I didn't go into the barn for two weeks after those two days for fear of what else I might find! I guess I'm going to be good at taking it apart before too long!:chug:

But there shouldn't be a gasket betwen the bell housing and the Transmission .

This is where we sit now. Now the vacuum lines are confusing me. I've looked at the diagrams, but don't have an air pump nor an auto tranny so I'm lost on the one from distributor and egr at this point. Not sure the rest are right but closest I could get with diagrams below

Anyone have thoughts? I'll post some pics with where they are currently ran.

Distributor going nowhere currently as well as E side of carb. Thinking that needs capped.

On that note she's almost ready to turn over.
Sorry for all the posts
