This one is fine. Thank you CJ. I could never find it! Much appreciated

tell you; why they are? WELLLLL in a four wheel drive vehicle you have TWO differentials. One is in the rear and the other is FRONT. That's how it's been on jeeps since 1941 or so.

Wasn't meant as a joke. Should have been more specific. Anyone have a guess on what gears this Frankenstein might have in the front, which is the picture in my other post. Was not asking for a count of how many diff's I have. :) lol

yes a little specific would have been good. because that';s what you getat 6 am when i'm main lining coffee.
could raise one wheel if it's not a locker, rotate tire and count revolutions of drive shaft. That should get you close.
Didn't mean to sound like bickering CJ. Where i'm from we call that pickin'.

Well they sent me the wrong pressure line for the power steering, so it is going to hold me up a few more days unless I can find one local. still got a bunch of other stuff to do (like put in the drive shaft)

finally put the belly pan back up and mounted the tranny back up. That thing was a PITA to get lined back up!!

Thus far tonight I have had to part together 2 PS return lines to create one that HOPEFULLY won't leak. Threads were stripped in head (or friends an idiot and over tightened) at thermostat housing. Re-tapped them to make him feel better and also cleaned them out a lot. Got new bolts and gasket, installing that now. Rear drive shaft going in now as well. Waiting to see if PS stopped leaking. Should be able to fire within the hour, or until something else goes wrong.

made big rookie mistake last night which slowed me down for at least an hour. I forgot to ground the starter solenoid! Tried starting it after that, have spark and fuel, but wouldnt start. Pretty much flooded it trying so we called it a night until this afternoon.

She runs!!! Stopping is tricky though. Still got to get brakes adjusted. Smoking like mad out the back (white) so that should get interesting. Hasn't ran really long in 6 years so she's running out behind the garage right now. Trying to clean it out. View attachment 13830

Back at it. Head gasket is blown so we are in the process of ripping head off

2 exhaust header bolts and 2 exhaust bolts dead stuk or stripped. Any thought how to get out? I mean bad stuck or stripped

Looks very familar...

Try some kind of penetrating oil on the stuck bolts, but I think you might have found where your coolant was leaking from/why it was leaking!

Yea, its pretty nasty. I know what cylinder has coolant flowing like a river. The top end of this is UGLY. Guessing I am going to need to do a little more than have the head machined and valve job. Trying to find somewhere in Indy here where I can have it done when I am out of town next week. Thus far the bolts are not too hard to get out, but it was 1am when we called it quits. Have to get them off today so I can bring them to machinist tomorrow and leave for Florida Friday

HEads got dropped off this AM with the intake and exhaust (needs new studs). Have to pull block and get it in to get checked out. Was not planning on a rebuild, but guess its where we are now!!

How can you determine what timing chain you have? I have seen options for 5/8 and 1/2" sprocket width. Is it just a take off and measure deal?

that would be my guess. measure the thickness of the gear.

Well the two week break stoppe we yanked the block out last night. So much room!

So I pulled block out and sent it off to machine shop. Pretty reputable little shop. Quote came back on short block alone at $1300!!! Said the crank needs ground, cylinders bored, blah blah all the way down to freeze plugs. Is this un heard of for the bottom half only? How much could I buy a decent used AMC 304 for? I'm at about $1700 for whole engine if I have them do the block!! Wasn't expecting this.
