Build Thread '81 CJ-7 Laredo build
That's a relief - earlier it sounded like you parting the whole thing out. Now it makes more sense

If you have a knocking it probably spun the bearing on the #6 rod. It seems to be a common problem with these motors.

I'll take a video and let you all hear for yourselves.

I would like to defend myself a little. The only way I could generate some quick cash to get me back in a Cj this Summer was to part this somewhat and throw that cash at the '82. If you look at the Craigslist ad I was keeping the Cj without a drivetrain to build my Cj pick up. I wasn't junking it. Doing it this way means I probably won't have a Jeep till Fall. It ruins a lot of plans. A Mazda Protégé isn't what our plans are based around. :(

Well in that case... If you do part with some pieces... I AM on the market for a fuel tank... Just saying.

But I get your plan. Either way, I hope it all works out for what you want to do.

Pete, I know you doubt you talents, but you can rebuild, replace, or go ape :dung: mad. But keep in mind what you ran into with the little red jeep. This is just an engine. Take it out, set it aside for a winter rebuild project. Find a junk yard running motor, stick that in, and then drive the thing. :D The rebuild will be a life time experience, and if your successful and you will be, you can sell it for good cash! :) Win Win Situation! :notworthy:

:agree: 110%

I'm just glad you are keeping big brother around. Now get a game plan and we will help you any way we can.

I took all my ads down and didn't sell a thing. I spoke with the guy I got the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l from cause he had a 360 in a newer ad. He had sold the 360 but has a complete carb to pan 40K AMC 304 he'd let me have for $200 due to what happened to the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I'm thinking about it. I think I'd rather have the 360 if I'm going to do this all over again.

Do it! :)

If ya grab the AMC 304 just look at it as a place holder. Once it's in and runnin, the 360 should be a pretty smooth swap, no? All the prep work would have to be done for the 360 anyway.......

I suppose I could go either way with it. I think more of me is with you in that I would want a 360 over a AMC 304 . You could get it as shum said to get all the work of a V8 swap done... Then once you had the 360 it would be an easy change over. But my stipulation for doing it that way would be to get the AMC 304 for as cheap as possible. $200 for w complete running engine is a good deal, but I would think about how much you had in the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , what he sold it to you for, etc. After all, he did sell it to you (I assume) as a good engine. If you go for the AMC 304 , I'd try and haggle him down a bit.

YES-If funds allow, go with the AMC 304 . :punk:

I really don't see a big difference in the 360 vs the AMC 304 . Unless you modify the 360. Just make sure the AMC 304 doesn't end up like the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

You guys are relentless! Thanks. Still a little negotiating going on but looks like I'll be adding a AMC 304 conversion to this thread. :chug::rolleyes:

Hopefully the AMC 304 comes with a flywheel their harder to find then the 360 and AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .
Also, there's fewer AMC 304 out there, if you decide to sell the AMC cars guys would stand inline for one.

I'm shelving this project for awhile. After going over and over this in my mind this Cj is best suited for what I want in my pick up build. The 3.73s and 35s play nice together and will give it the right stance. The solid frame will also make the lengthening process a lot easier.

I've been talking with another member here and hopefully we can come to an agreement that will help both of our projects move a little quicker. The 82 with its 2.72 gears. ( for now ) is much better suited for daily driving on 31s. Hopefully I'm back to this project by Winter , early Spring at the latest.

Reading over the thread, looks like you have put some work into it. I'm putting my Cj project in the back seat currently too..

Well three months have gone by and the ideas for what to do with this Cj have run the gamut. It's gone from being a starter kit for a pick up build to being sold and replaced with another. It took awhile but I'm over the frustration of the last engine swap to have at it again.

First thing to do is part out the 82. I need the room, it's just too rusty and I don't have the time before we move. I'm going to use the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l out of that Cj for the Laredo . Yup pull that one , clean it and paint all over again. I've been saving a little and will add that to the parts money as well.

While the Cj was outside with a for sale sign on it it got a lot of looks. Vicki was always texting me that someone was here looking at it. Now I'm going to make it impossible to ignore. I'm going to be spending a decent amount of cash with Genright Off-road to make sure. I'm also going to come up with a different top and door configuration. I was going to get a Supertop with tinted windows but the Jeep won't fit in the garage with one. Anyway time to start tearing apart the 82. Once I'm done there will get this one back on the road.
