Please tell me that you aren't going to disturb that braded wiring. Now that is special. Seriously though, the PO at least tried to make the wiring neat and tidy.

Missed this somehow. I'm going to try and get rid of as much unnecessary wiring as possible. Meanwhile I started doing the little stuff to make sure this thing fires. Flushed the radiator last night.

At least the right color came out ;)

That's true. The oil was just as clean. This leads me to believe the previous owner was honest. He told me they dropped that AMC 304 in but never got it to fire due to it having minimal spark. When I looked in the radiator I thought I would need a new one. After a good flush it came pretty clean. Here's the best pic I could get before the flush

After that I just rinsed it off a bit. Lots of critters trying to make the Scramble their home. Next I'll be taking the intake off and cleaning it up. Then sometime after Labor Day I'll start putting all the goodies on to fire this puppy up.

I would like to hear your impressions of that D.U.I. after you get it installed. You sure got it for a good price.

The one I bought already is for the CJ7 for a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I will be buying one for the Scramblers AMC 304 as well but I should have the other one installed and being daily driven first.

Pete, do me a favor, when you bump up from 7mm to 8mm wires for the gm distributor do not install yellow, please, any color but yellow wires! :D

Yes! same color I went with :chug:

Posi, how about the coil? :poke: Match the new wires or old school black?

After another look see of the pic, it appears that the oil breather cap and the fitting on the brake booster must be eradicated as well. That distributor cap is kinda orangey/yellowish too, I hope the new one on the DUI is the right color :p:D

The DUI eliminates that coil , the oil cap will be painted but the fitting on the brake booster will probably stay. The DUI will have a blue cap as well :p:p:p

As mentioned no stand alone coil.
You must have yellow accell wires :D

It'd look good with his paint and graphics though. :D I yellowed myself out a few Jeeps ago

There was a long standing joke about Mexican bikers changing all their wires to yellow. Can't remember the joke, but a friend of mine would laugh every time he saw yellow wires on a motor vehicle.

On a serious note no one brought up the lack of a fan. I'm thinking dual electric puller fans on the backside of the radiator. I'm hoping to have that money saved by the the time I finally get it to fire. I never used electric fans before. Thoughts?

I had to switch to electric fans last year. The pro for me is that they fit (my mechanical fan was hitting the radiator). I hear that they don't draw down the power, but whatever. I can't notice. The can for me has been mainly the installation. I had to redo it so that the power steering pulley would no longer hit the power wired. I have also blown a few fuses (same issue). All has been good since I installed it upside down so the wired go toward the top of the radiator. I used the Ford Contour replacement fans and a dual speed controller. It keeps the Jeep nice and cool.

Mine came with an electric fan. I didn't try a mechanical fan with the same engine so I don't know anything about what mechanical power loss there might be. When mine came on, it was loud and had a significant electrical power loss. It was connected straight to the battery with a fuse and it would dim all of my lights and I'm not sure what kind of strain it put on the alternator or battery.

When I did the swap, I kept the mechanical fan on it and have been much happier. I do miss the benefit of the electrical fan kicking on after my drive to help with the heat saturation when turned off.

I read about a lot who have switched to electric fans so I would think there is a benefit in power-gain or something that I haven't experienced but I've been happy without it.

Personally, if it runs cool enough with a stock fan/shroud combo I'd leave well enough alone. A spare belt under the seat doesnt take up much room and generally speaking is what would fail. E fans have more things to fail and those spares take up alot more room. I know you have a AMC 304 , but my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with No shroud runs cool enough on a 100* day I can still grab the upper radiator hose and hang on to it for a bit
