I once bought a Chilton manual for the CJ and inside was an application for a free wiring schematic which I have used for many years. Jeep 1984 CJ-5 & CJ-7 | Prospero's Garage

Well it seems that when I disconnect the 2 wire plug on the alternator my amp draw from the battery goes away. Any ideas

Get a new ALT.

Sounds like a plan. Buy a new alternator and now I have to take it back

Have you done any IGN mods?
You may well need to install a Diode in the excite wire, to stop this feedback.
