84 cj7 all stock for now
I am new to the site. :chug:

I have an 84 CJ7 . All stock drivetrain. I screwed up about a year ago and did a neutral drop. Heard a loud noise from the right rear. I did not check it out (lazy because it still worked). It has not been an issue except under hard take off until last night. I had to stop and back up a small hill in low range and it just started free wheeling like it was in neutral. I do not see anything obvious from the outside. No loud noises coming from the diff area either while I was coasting. I plan on tearing it apart this weekend, but any ideas where to look first?

Thanks for any help!

Might be open diff and broken axle shaft. That would be best case senario. I assume when you open the cover, you'll know. If cant see anything, pull the axles.

Thats where I would start...

Does it still drive when not trying to back up a hill?

Thanks for the reply. It would not go at all. I was able to lock the front axle and drive it into the garage with the Transfer Case in 4WD.

Are the drive plates on the ends of the axles an issue or weak point?

Do you have the Model 20 rear end or Dana 44 ?

The model 20 has a few weak spots until to take care of them. 2 pice axles among the most common

Put it back in 2wd at the Transfer Case , then block tires and put on e-brake (just in case) then put it in gear and get out and see if the rear drivleling is still sppinning. If it is, it's in the rear end. If not, it's in the Transfer Case .

If it's in the rear end, start tearing her appart until you see the damage.

If it's the Transfer Case , thats a little more involved...

Here's your problem. I agree with JR and think you spun the axle shaft in the hub. It's a very common problem with the AMC20 rear end. You need to buy one piece axle shafts. Might as well do both sides.
You can verify the AMC20 rear end because it's very round

If you still have the stock axles with the pressed on hub, my vote goes to you spinning a hub also. Sounds like it's time for one piece axles.

Thanks for the help!

With everyones help, I was able to confirm that the hubs spun on the axle shafts. In fact the nut, key and everything was off on the driver side. Nothing really holding the wheel on and I coasted this thing about a mile downhill back to the house.

One more question. Do the stock axles have clips holding them into the diff? I got the one piece axles and trying to get the in for the weekend and just wanted to know what needs to come apart.

Thanks for the help!

Nope, no c-clips in the 20.
You need to take the hubs off to get the brake backing plates off to put on the new axles.
There is 4 bolts holding the axle retainer on that need to be taken out. The axle should pull out than.
Be sure to put the brake backing plate on the new axles before you press the new bearings on.

I have the 1 piece axle kit, Ten Factory, and I have pressed the bearing and plates on per the paper that came with the set. I read somewhere else about a thrust block that may need to be removed. No where on the papers that came with the axle kit say anything about it. Is this something that I need to look farther into?

Thanks

Been a while but IIRC the thrust block they mention is between the axle ends in the diff..if the 20 even has them. Again, IIRC the axles basically need to be pushed into the center a bit to install the "C" clip then pushed back into a recess in the carrier. The T block then keeps the axles from sliding inward and allowing the "C" clips to fall off and the axles and wheels ride outta the diff housing. If the 20 dosent have clips then I cant see it having a T block either.

My 20 didn't have c-clips but it did have the block (Detroit locker). My Superior axles said to take it out. I don't know about the 10 factor axles though, I would call them.

I too have a stock 84 CJ7 im doing a tub swap on. I put it on blocks last night and noticed that driver side rear wheel spins free forward and backward along with the yoke. The passenger side however spins freely to the rear but only a 1/16 to a 1/4 turn forward before it locks with a clunk. yoke spins with this side also and it doesn't seem to be the brake dragging. Thinking it may have a problem with the spider gear? Haven't pulled the drums yet, just something I noticed. Any Ideas on what it could be?

This cj has been sitting for 9 years then it was dollied to my house and has sit for another 2yrs.

Sounds like you have on open diff that may have some issues. Open the cover and look inside. Spin the axles and see what happens and where the clunk is coming from.

Ok, i'll do that. Tub and fuel tank should be out this weekend then i'll pop that cover off the rear and take a look. thanks.
