Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone could help shed some light on a few questions I have regarding my T-18 swap.

Currently my '85 CJ7 has the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with the TF999 automatic. I picked up a T-18 with a Dana 20 attached to it from a 78 CJ7 . I haven't decided if I want to drop the coin on swapping my 300 in favor of the Dana 20 .. But that's a discussion for another day.

My questions are below. Sorry in advance if they seem elementary.

1. What flywheel should I use? One made for my 85' or one made for the 78'. They seem to have different part numbers.

2. What clutch kit should I use? One made for my '85 or one made for the '78 the tranny came out of?

3. Someone mentioned a special pilot bushing since I'm swapping from a auto to manual. Wouldn't this be included in the kit? Or am I'm looking for a special part?

Currently I have the T-18 Transmission , bell housing with fork, Transfer Case , and a set of manual cj pedals to complete my swap. I believe all I need is the flywheel and clutch kit. Am I correct? I realize I may also need to get new driveshafts.

Thanks in advance for helping a newb. This will be my first swap on my first CJ. I came from owning a jeep XJ and while they have lots of creature comforts, I'm loving the simplicity of these CJs. I'm hooked.

Use the flywheel for the 85

2. What clutch kit should I use? One made for my '85 or one made for the '78 the tranny came out of?
Again, use a clutch kit for the 85

3. Someone mentioned a special pilot bushing since I'm swapping from a auto to manual. Wouldn't this be included in the kit? Or am I'm looking for a special part?
You'll need a pilot bushing for a manual....it may or may not be included in a kit. They aren't hard to find, however, if I remember correctly, I had to modify it slightly to fit the end of the input shaft.

Yep. You will need to do the obvious tunnel trimming. Measure the whole unit (bell, tranny xfercase) and compare it with your current setup to give you an idea on driveline length.

I would recommend going with the 76-79 clutch
The T-18 has a 10 spline 1 1/16" shaft and the T-176 a 10 spline 1 1/8"
The pilot bushing should be the proper one in the 76-79 kit as well.

Confirm your crankshaft is drill'd for a pilot bearing. Most are.
BUT-I have seen some that weren't........
