85ish Bronco T18

Question for the guru's out there.

I am putting together a 84 CJ7 with a AMC 360, SR4 tranny (there, I said it!), Dana 300 tc. I just picked up a locker and the Warn full floater kit for the rear end.

Obviously, the SR4 is the weak link. I found a salvage yard that has a 85 or so Bronco with a T-18 in for $250.00.

The question, what will it take to get it into the drivetrain?

Check and be certain that the Ford Bronco Transmission is a T-18 . It may be a NP435. Either is a good transmission, the NP435 has a lower 1st gear, and can be adapted into a CJ. Most of the swap information I've read indicates that the preferred T18 is from a 2wd vehicle. The NP435 either 2wd or 4wd works (from my research).

Mine was from a 2wd (I am running a Ford 5.0L, so I'm using a stock Ford bellhousing):





Either transmission will need to be dis-assembled. MAW do a complete rebuilt because you will need to replace the mainshaft with the conversion shaft.

Not certain about re-using the SR4 Bellhousing, I believe a T-176 bellhousing will bolt to the Ford 'butterfly' pattern T18 (or NP435). A new or conversion pilot bearing should also be on the list.

Skid plate modifications will be necessary. Perhaps even a 'drop'. Stock CJ's with T18's had 7/8" of spacers installed between the skid/cross-member and the frame. I used a skid/cross-member from TDK with no drop and no holes for the transmount or torque arm drilled. I aligned the drive train, then drilled the holes for them:













Some sheet metal needs to be trimmed from the floor pan:



Possible gear shift modification:



New trans cover:



New or modified driveshafts may be necessary. On my CJ5 , I had a Tom Woods CV style rear installed, and a regular Tom Woods front.
