Is the scrambler rear axle something special or is it a regular old AMC20 . Honestly I believe it's is a regular old AMC-20 which is common on all CJ style Jeeps in those years. I believe it is a wide track. You need to find one locally because shipping would be expensive. Open up your axle and find out the gear ratio, many scramblers had 3.31's. You will know it's a wide track because ALL wide tracks have welded on shock towers rather than the tower studs being on the spring plate.

Not true, my 83 had the shocks mounted to the spring plate. There were no shock mounts welded to the axle.
If I may ask, what happened to your housing?

Old Dog - Was told by my Jeep guy that the way to know a wide track was because they had welded on shock mounts and he showed me several at the time. Naturally I believed him. So, Corrected I do stand.
It does seem like AMC20 axles should be available, around here they are frequently on craigs list. I suppose we might have a lot more available here in Arizona though. You know how it is, nothing rusts away here in the dry South West.
Suz - I do wonder what happened to your original rear end? You might be able to retube the one you have.

It's just gotten too loose to pack the bearings in tight enough... Sorry, no chance I'll EVER be coming thru PA! Problem around here is, all the Scramblers I know of (which is approx. 8-10 without me having to think too hard) are running and not available for parts... except maybe CJ's. How about it man. Can you help a girl out?

HMM was your 83 a CJ5 ? All widetracs do have the shock mounts welded on. Any possibility a PO may have swapped you to Narrow Tracks? The 5s never got WT
What gear ratio? You know I am looking for a lower geared axle.
Scramblers use the same axles the 7s used. 82 plus will be widetraks.
No need to open the axle to count the teeth unless you suspect a PO may have changed the ratio. AMC20s have a letter code stamped into them that will indicate the gear ratio and the whether it is Limited slip or not. If you are lucky the front axle will have a tag between two of the cover bolts that with some cleaning will actually just have the gear ratio printed on it. Other wise some carb cleaner and a wire brush to the 20 should reveal your code.

I'm talking about my 7. It had stock wide tracks when I got it.
I'd blame the PO but there was no mounts welded to the axle tube.
You know how AMC was, nothing is for certain.

Qkay, Okay, Okay, they don't all have welded on shock mounts.

Honestly I never looked. I assumed 2.73 or maybe 3.31 since its a stock '83. I guess I should have a look.

Well, I've gone and done it now... Marked the rear right hub, as advised, and set out to see if I could make it spin. Got her to 'clunk' a few really good times. Hub marks are still lined up perfectly but, now I'm dead in the water. She won't go forward or backward. I can hear the drive shaft spinning though. Got out to lock the front hubs and damn if they weren't already in the locked position. Have I really been riding around like that for almost a decade???!!!
Guess I've got some reading to do...and my girlfriend, Pearl, is camping out in the cotton field for a day or two ;-)

So, this on another thread. I tried it and the drive shaft is definitely still spinning...

The model 20 has a few weak spots until to take care of them. 2 piece axles among the most common
Put it back in 2wd at the Transfer Case , then block tires and put on e-brake (just in case) then put it in gear and get out and see if the rear drivleling is still sppinning. If it is, it's in the rear end. If not, it's in the transfercase.
If it's in the rear end, start tearing her apart until you see the damage.
