Have you had a chance to pull the rear diff cover to see what went high order? If you cant find a complete diff local,you may have to consider fixing the one in there now.

It's ok to drive around with the hubs locked as long you are in 2WD you are not hurting anything.

For my own future reference, would it have been a bad idea for Suz to have tried this on jack stands?

Basically I want to know if it's a bad idea to have the engine turn one or both axles in the air.

The answer to both is no but she may have not have been able to get it to do it with the axle in the air spinning freely on the ground it gave it some resistence.

Haven't made any more progress. Used 4wd to get her back under shelter. Haven't seen my keys since last post. Had to use spares. Have looked high and low...

Ok, last time, you spun the hub. By a one piece axle kit another go to mcgees or I can cage them out. You do not need another piece of Dana 20 that will give you the same problem at a later time.

O. K., I get that, But... the axle is not even engaging at this point. Mike still insists that I have to find a rear housing. What will fit besides a Scrambler housing?

Are all or at least several torques heads spun out? Not fun, never is. There are ways, non of them are easy.

Spray some penetrating oil on each torx bolt, take the torx socket that fits and tap it with a hammer into each bolt head ( and by tap I mean hit it) If you have access to a cordless impact tool (Dewalt, Bosch,Hitachi ect) try to Carefully back them out, but make sure the torx bit is completely seated or you can strip out the bolt. Otherwise, try using leverage, add a piece of pipe to extend the ratchet/breaker bar your using now.

The bolts that are stuck secure the cover plate to the differential housing?

Would heating the bolts expand the metal and disrupt the grip of rust?

these things are great and the very best way to deal with torx bolts. You just hit it with a hammer. It turns while keeping the bit in the hole at the same time. greatly reduce the chance of stripping the head out. will sometimes even work on stripped heads if there is anything left at all. like the ones some moron tried to remove with an Allan wrench.

always buy the best torx sockets you can find, cheap ones will twist right off or snap. I have a set of Kobalt I have found work well, would go with Craftsman or Snap on (for the independently wealthy).

for torx heads this works way better than an impact wrench.

best penetrating oil ever 50% acetone 50% ATF. Have to keep it shook up and sealed or the acetone goes away pretty quick.

Will run to town and try to get one. Our Sears is pretty sparse on inventory though. Got one bolt out. The rest are not completely stripped, but I can't get my bit seated even with a hammer blow...
