1984 CJ-7 (just bought it, so I have to do some work and see what it has in it.. other than 4.2L Auto.. 4" lift, 33" tires... my '75 had a 304 2" Burbank supspension, warn winch, full cage, all the goodies, the '79 had a 401 turbo charged hi-po with t98 or 18, which ever one had the granny low first gear (never can remember which).. had all the items needed to 4wheel, none of the show and go poopie.. I don't believe "chrome will get you home"! I'm also not one to go out to see if I can tear up my jeep, I go where I must, usually with a group that I hung with.. Used to be part owner in Diablo Off Road Center in Concord California.. Jack Essex owned Diablo 4WD, George Clause was Mr. Base CAmp, and mine was "Sounds Etc" all under one big roof "the Diablo Off Road Center"..
removing the compressor from the passenger side of the motor, the alternator is on the lower half of the compressor assembly mounting.. saw a picture of a non a/c AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l motor.. it had the alternator on top where the compressor was, and a bypass pulley (idler) underneath it.. being serpenting, and pre-california motor, I can't just put a shorter belt on, it hits the thermostat housing, the radiator hose, and everything else between here and the rubicon.. tried a pulley sent to me, but it turned out to be a V-Belt Altrnator bracket, not the same unfortunately.. any clues? any one out there remove their a/c unit and go through this problem? thanks.. wayne 1984 CJ7 Laredo AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l Auto... then after that, theres the shift quadrant lamp on the column, can't find it under the dash to hook it to the dash lights.. and........ dome light in the back, wiring comes forward in a loom along the door edge, goes under THAT dash again, ? and, last but not least.. parking brake light, sometimes I look and its on, most of the time I look.. and its off.. checked the switch, looks good and seems to operate, but will take a stiff wire brush to the contacts and see what that does.. and...... and......

For serpentine for your year, I believe the compressor mounting bracket would stay, and an idler pulley bracket would bolt into the compressor mounting holes; then the idler would mount to that bracket; the alternator stays below or in it's current position.
A shorter belt would be used to make up for the difference in size between the AC clutch pulley and the smaller diameter idler pulley.

As shown below if I'm not mistaken.
You should need the top bracket, pulley spacer(s), and idler pulley and bolt.

very interesting, Ed sent me that one part w/pulley, but I couldn't bolt it up to my existing a/c mount because my mount has horizontal mounting holes and this mount uses vertical, where did you get the picture, or where would this be available?

factory parts manual
I also am assuming we are talking about the Sanden compressor, not a York.
Diagram would be for a Sanden or rotary compressor.

right your are.. so, I guess I won't be buying that part over the counter, since AMERICA'S Jeep Dealerships don't sell anything or stock anything older than about 10 years now.. (the chinese won't allow it)..
