hellow. i am new to this forum. been want to buy a jeep for some time now. i have a few questions. what are the differnaces in the CJ5 and CJ7 . what i thing that i want is a about 78- earley 80's with a AMC 304 v8. because i like the way they sound. what about power stering and brakes? what year models did the start. i am not wanting an every day driver but also don;t want show quanity. just something to ride around on sat and sunday. thanks bdog

CJ7 is longer. if your tall a CJ7 will have more leg room.

Welcome
A 7 is stabiler on the road than a 5 but 5's are nice for wheeling. Its a matter of preference.I had both and wish i'd keep the 5 for playing.

what about the differance in the big inline 6 and the AMC 304 v8. not worries about gas mpg. would like for it to sound nice. how do the 6 sound. also are the il 6 better that the AMC 304 for reliability. sorry for rambling just tring to make my mind up.

thanks bdog

i got a 6 and love it. i play on the trails and drive it around town and its good at both. as for sound nothing sounds like a v8.

The main difference between a CJ5 and a CJ7 is the length. A CJ5 has a 84 inch wheelbase. A CJ7 has a 93.4 inch wheelbase.
Because of the short wheelbase a CJ5 has a curved door to accommodate the rear wheel-well. Here is my CJ5

Because of the short wheelbase the CJ5 can be a little less stable on the street.
This next picture is of a CJ7 . This one belongs to iCEMAN

As for engines, both the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and the AMC 304 are great engines. I've had both. I now have a AMC 304 and love it. Nice sound.
Other things to keep in mind when looking for a CJ are the transmissions. The trannies of the '70s were very good and strong. Unfortunately there were also a lot of 3 speeds made in the '70s. Try to get a 4 speed.
In the '80 four and five speeds were more common but they were often light duty. Avoid the T-4 and T-5 transmissions.

CJ5 was made from 1955 to 1983
CJ7 were made 1976 to 1986

I have a CJ7 with AMC 304 and auto........ I like the way it sounds and the positive pullaway from a dead stop. The carb is Motorcraft 2100 and is smooth as soap.

No place to wheel..... sand roads only but lots of national forest trails.
