I am getting ready to change Transmission fluid (dirty) - I have read several posts suggesting check the level while in neutral -the manual says check in park (while engine is at running temp). Clarification? Anything I need to watch for or tips? Thanks all!

I would go with the manual. Remember in an auto you never get it all out. If it is that dirty you may want to drive it around some then change again. If there was a PO it might have been a long time since it was changed

Go with the manual, the fluid is used to hold internal components in position to maintain a gear. It's basically hydraulic fluid and use the Chrysler tranny fluid, also a good time to adjust your bands per manual

Changing ATF is a real pain for me, since I do not have a pan big enough to get it all, then it gets all over the floor and me. When you get past that point, I would advise welding a drain plug in a good location, clear from the tranny innards. Some times there is a drain for the torque converter. Then of course add the filter and an adjustment would be good. If you can find a location for a chip magnet in the bottom of the pan do that. If you do travel in the dirt, add a tranny cooler since you cannot overcool it. Go easy in tightening the pan bolts as usually they are on the big side. Record the change date and mileage for your next change.

Get the fluid good and warm
Shift slowly thru all gears P to 1st then back to P
Check in P
I always flush auto Transmission by removing both lines, one goes in an empty bucket the other a full gallon of Transmission fluid.
This rids all old fluid.

Thanks for all the tips. I do not have a solvent to clean things once I have it drained so delayed. Plus the more I read about it, the more it makes me nervous to do it. I am not a mechanic and don't want to make a bigger issue than what I have now- so- in the garage the old girl sits :(

Update: I got the brake cleaner. Got the engine warmed up and set tools out. As I was laying underneath trying to figure out how I was going to get to the rear bolts in the pan a good friend stopped by. I did not know that the skid plate attached to the frame/Transfer Case should NOT be removed to get to the Transmission pan. Thankfully he has huge strength and is mechanical- we were able to get it all bolted back before dropping everything. The Transmission fluid is not changed but wow I learned a lot.
