What air filter are you running on your 79 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and power brakes? The original air cleaner is long gone and it was replaced with a, K&N. Which doesn't fit the new 2 barrel carb.
I've read a cold air intake system is needed, but I cant find one.

The original factory ate hard to find in rough shape and crazy expensive.

Thanks ,
Lou

Solution
My brother gifted me a whole truck load of new parts for my project.

The carburetor is a MaXpeeding 2 bbl
I installed the same carburetor on my 86 258 IL6 and had a heck of a time finding an air cleaner.

This is what I found and it works great.
Hot Rod Chrome Air Cleaner HRC638-R (ebay link)
It has a 2 5/8 neck which fits the MaXpeeding 2 bbl with the included adapter.

The carb bowl vent will prevent the air cleaner adapter from seating on the carb so I used 2 oil filter seals for a 1999 Ford F50 stacked underneath the air cleaner adapter which allowed enough clearancde above the carb bowl vent nipple. I had to try a few seals to ensure that the carb neck protruded above the seals enough to keep the air cleaner...
I wouldn't say cold air intake is needed. You lose maybe 1-2 HP without it. I run an open air cleaner on my 83.

K&N makes both a 7" and 9" filter housing that fit with a power brake booster.

I should also mention I'm planning on doing a single barrel carb to,a two barrel if I can find an intake manifold. My plan is to do a complete new fuel system from the tank forward.

I have a Howell TBI on mine so it's likely a different base than the 1bbl.

If you go with a motorcraft 2100 for your 2bbl or one like it, your options open up since that base is shared with most 4bbl carburetors. That's what my TBI uses.

Are you happy with the Maxpeeding carb? My brother gifted it and an enormous amount of parts to me for this project.
I had never heard of this carburetor company before. I'm laid up right now waiting for back surgery and he just retired and loves working on these. So he's got my jeep torn apart in my shop waiting or looking for various parts...

Thanks

So far it runs so much better than the Weber that the previous owner installed.
I was put off at first because it is a Chinese clone. However, I have since viewed multiple videos where garage owners and rodders have used it with success. Not sure of the longevity of it, but I’m willing to give it a whirl with the results I’ve experienced so far. I’m not done tweaking the settings and timing yet.

Hope you heal quickly. Your brother sounds like a nice guy. Let me know what you end up doing.

Im still trying to find a 2bbl intake for it. My brother didn't realize we had to switch out the intake from a single to a 2 bbl intake manifold.
He bought everything new from the tank forward . He thought it would just bolt up. I was amazed how crazy expensive the used ones are on line. If you can find them.

Don’t get much better than that right there !
