all around help for newbie

Hey guys,

I have been reading the post, looking at pics, googling words that I see and don't know to educate myself on everything.

But I have a number of problems that I am hoping that I could get some help on that you might find small.

I got it for next to nothing so as-is was great for me.

I have a 86 CJ7 , the only upgrades i have done is putting 31 TSL Super Swampers on, and painted it with (DIY) bed liner.

The high pressure hose has dry rotted and sprung a leak.
How do you get to the hose connector at the box?

It "looks" like the front end is lower than the rear.
leafs or shocks ( both look stock )

Former owner "cut" emissions out and put headers on to y pipe, so carb is "cold starting" even in 95 degree weather.

If it sits for more than 3 days I have to jump it off even with an Optima battery

#1 power steering hose. You may have to remove the radiator. The high pressure hose needs to be replaced with this.:

#2 probably not shocks. Shocks arent made to lift the Jeep. Odds are good your springs are sagging.

#3 need more info. Is it the stock carb?

#4 if it sits and goes dead in all likelyhood the battery is shot and wont hold a charge. If you run it and after the fact it doesnt restart then its different.

yes stock carb
The PO was a muffler mechanic who cut all the lines..carb and did the headers
I will get on photobucket tomorrow but i got 2pics on my profile that may help with the front suspension
( wheel clearance looks off )
and the pic may have caption of "wt-" is this ....is due to my education is not at mechanic's level
So homework is research ...brand of carb,and phot bucket.

I drove it 5 miles today...as soon as i turn it off it wouldnt start

does it try to turn over, or does it act like the battery is dead? if you have a volt meter, you should be reading 14.4 across the battery while it is running.. it sounds like you have something that is shorting out and draining the battery.

my Fluke meter says 13.8

there is alot of wires with butt connectors added may need to trace or rewire

Try running the bat in a different vehicle to see if it'll take a charge. With it running with the bat disconnected, feeling it's a bad battery.

Now how long are those front shackles? Also are the ends rounded? They almost look homemade. Looking at the pic, they look twice as long as the bumper is thick.

Those are some crazy shackles up front. From your profile pics it almost looks as if you have 2 /12 in. lift springs in the rear but not in front. Thats a heck of a rake you got there. Judging by the shackles your going to need to go over the whole suspension. The p.o. didnt do you any favors. By any chance are there blocks in between the rear springs and the axle?

The stock Carter carbs are troublesome with all the emission doo dads hooked up and functioning properly ,more a less without. Was the nutter bypass done as well? Heres two threads for your reading pleasure. You may want to go with the Mc2100 carb.

got a new batt today we will see in 4 to five days....till then im going to raise the front leafs to the second hole to see what it does and order shocks.....what skyjacker or......any suggestions?


I purchased this for $2000.....(PO's wife pregnant)...so not really complaining

Moving the leaf spring to the next hole up will lower the Jeep not raise it- pretty sure you are looking at new springs or dropping the rear to level it out.

ok i dont understand...when u put tension on a spacer with an "arch" it pushes ( like a brake pad spring )

In order for you to get more lift, you would need a longer shackle ( not recommended), by moving the spring up one hole you are moving the spring closer to the frame, effectively lowering the vehicle by moving the axle closer to the frame. The upper end of the shackle also pivots so you are not compressing the spring, it would just push the bottom of the shackle outward.

Grab a superlift or similar kit and roll out.
If your working on the cheap see if anyone has any take offs (take off to upgrade).

got it...would've responded earlier but went fly-fishing and to the range with my fellow jar-head,..... but i did notice through my research last night is that my front springs are flat compared to all the pics i have seen. And i also take it that the red "spacers" are not stock.
right now i will agree with brock and get the super lift kit soon

did find a guy 4 miles from my place that they say is a jeep "master"....talked to him on the phone (scary nice) he wants to see it next week......Off Road Atlanta....he says he has plenty of "take-offs" of almost anything i need.

the nutter bypass looks feasible but i cannot locate those colors in the wiring at all. but will trace down what i can.

and guys i do appreciate all the advice...you will be tired of my lack of knowledge on this. My knowledge lies in locksmithing (auto.... mostly commercial and residetial) and audio visual....so if there is something i can help with let me know....

Those are your body mount bushings . Sometimes people put larger ones in for tire clearance wich is reffered to as a body lift. Yours look like stock replacements size wise just made from polyurethane not rubber. This is a good thing.

met with walter today "the atlanta jeep master" he was extremely helpful.
The front leaf springs are 2 leafs short , he said that he could do the nutter bypass as well as other "tricks" to "clean up" the carb problems,plus improve the front caster and power steering hose for less than $500

i thought that was very reasonable.......any thoughts

Walter of Off Road Atlanta is a genius....he not oly got me goin with better performance he went ahead and replace my valve cover ( and inspected valves and rods) as well as my P/S hose and "educated" me on what it needs and problems he saw...then told me how to do it myself..here are before and after....the charcoal thing im still confused about but its gone so...
