1983 CJ7 258 4.2 I6 - T5/300 - Dana 30 Front - AMC 20 Rear - motorcraft 2100 carb, nuttered factory dist, all smog emisions removed, Bridgestone Desert Dualer 31-10.50-15 tires, Upgraded Heater Blower to the Blazer 103, Sunpro RPM gauge, Sunpro mechanical oil gauge, new main bearings, main rod bearings, oil pump, RMS, distributor gasket, oil pan gasket,
anybody know what size drill bit and tap a man needs to pick up prior to buying the aluminum valve cover that says "drilling and tapping a few new holes needed" All the aftermarket aluminium to take place of my original plastic crappy valve cover advise that I will have to drill and tap for them to fit. since it says tap , than i will assume its the head that i will be drilling holes in rather than the valve cover. And also how many holes i will be drilling ? I am refering to these ones online that have "AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l " on top. And another question , is there anywhere to get a factory oil dipstick that is marked correct for the factory oil dipstick tube, without having to buy a new tube and stick. my jeep specs are listed under my icon.

I believe when I did mine they were 5/16 on the sides and 1/4 on the ends. Don't quote me on that, and also some of the holes may be in the head but not used with the factory cover. I had heli-coils in a couple of my holes that I just removed and my new alum valve cover bolted right on. I had a previous post somewhere on here with pics a while back.
You will just have to see how many you have when you get the crappy cover removed.
good luck.

I just did mine last fall - 83 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l - 5/16 on the sides (2) - the ends were all ready tapped.

(2) 5/16 on the side, ok great. guess for depth I will just mark my drill bit to the length of the stock bolt and buy two extra bolts for the side. Thanks guy's I will knock this job out soon as I choose which cover to go with . Any suggestions as to which valve cover ? And do you guys prefer rubber or cork gasket. I personally have used cork in the past with nice dose of Yama-Lube by Yamaha, as its the best gasket sealer I have ever seen in my life. Racing dirtbikes get twice as hot as car motor so I have never had it leak or fail.

In a small search I did on this one of the concerns I saw was not drilling to deep or you may damage the water jackets. Just a heads up before you start. :)

Don't drill the holes. You'll have two existing but untapped holes on the drivers/ manifold side of the engine. Just get a bottom tap and tap those two holes, and get shorter bolts than the ones that come with the kit (the bolts that came with my kit were all the wrong sizes anyhow).

I have the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l cover on one Jeep and a Clifford on the other. Either is fine. I used cork gaskets, but follow directions to the letter or they'll still leak.

Well I ordered aluminium valve cover today. should be here tuesday and ill slap it on ( if i get this valve train knock figuered out this weekend and fix ) :censored:

This Jeep is like fixing broken water lines in field, fix something and up springs something else ........dang.....Starting to think this Jeep is posessed  Does Chevy make a CJ7 :notworthy:
