Am I supposed to smell like a gas station attendant?

When I get out of my 79 CJ5 with the inline 6 (Everything original), I often get comments from my friends or coworkers that I smell like I've been cutting grass with a 2 cycle weedeater or something, haha.

I do have a smell of exhaust/gas on me all day if I drive my jeep. Over the winter it wasn't as noticeable because I had the top completely on and all shut up. But since its warming up here finally, I will have windows down, top off, ect...

I've had carb issues in the past, which makes me wonder if something isn't set right. When I get time I'm going to verify the exhaust line coming from the engine is good and tight.

Would replacing the carb help solve anything? I personally don't think it is set right, I don't have a vacuum gauge, so I plan on taking it to a local shop who specializes in older vehicles and restorations.

I have no leaks anywhere that would be causing the smell, but I know dryrotted lines MAY be a culprit.. but the smell only comes when the jeep is running. I know its an old Jeep but the smell just seems excessive to me, if nothing can be found I will just have to deal with smelling like Bubba the Gas Station attendant...

ive had a few cj's and this seems to be a common occurance..from what ive read in a previous post make sure the exhaust exits behind the rear tire 45 degrees down and to the outside..apprantly this pulls fumes away from the jeep..do you also have your evap system and charcoal canister all hooked up cause this will cause smell as well

Where does your tail pipe exit, left rear corner, or straight back? You may have a leak elsewhere in the system don't mess around with an exhausts leak.

The exhaust goes from the engine, under the driver side, through a Thrush Glasspack, up and over rear axle, and straight out the back. There is a little flare on the tip which angles down a bit..

straight out the back.

If you don't have a leak in the exhaust system, back-draft is a likely possibility.

When I first got mine, my friends and family would quickly comment that I smelt like the Jeep. After tweaking and adjusting the carb, spark, timing, etc, I no longer smell it myself and the comments have stopped. Also saw a good improvement in mileage. I've called them out on it and they said I no longer reak of exhaust/fumes. I don't have a top, only a bikini top used occasionally.

Straight out the back is never a good thing, you will always get exhaust in the cab.

Where is this located? Is it the black thing up in the fender area on the rear driver side?

There are two lines that go to that black thing in the rear..then 1 line off it to the front drivers side fender area to the large black can

1. Out the side, behind the rear tire.
2. At the rear corner angled out toward the side.

Anywhere you can get the effect of the wind going down the side of the vehicle while going down the road. That'll keep it from swirling up and into the cab from the rear due to the dead spot back there.
