amc 20 axle question

amc 20 axle question
as far as i can tell it has no locker. i finally got the dust cover off and it had alot of greyish black dust in it. the axle nut is tight. the noise can only be heard above 40 mph so no one can hear it as i drive by. pass in the back say its def the drivers side. and i can hear it with my head out the door. it drives fine as well.even pulled the drum and found nothing inside to be rubbing. its not popping now just has a odd sound between 40 and 50.if i roc the wheel holding it at the center of the left and right side it will move a little but only if the wheel is in one particular position. hope im not to confusing.

thank you busa dave. im leaning toward an axle shaft also. im going to just keep driving it easy and no wheeling for a while. i just got a new job and the moneys gonna be tuff to get together for a while. hope it either holds together or whatever it is will show itself im sure. thanks again for all the helpfull info and pics.

why not just pull the hub off and see if the splines are stripped or not.

Get yourself a 3' pc of 2" pipe to put over the biggest adjustable or pipe wrench you can find. I always had to rent the big cast iron hub puller from the local rental shop.

A bad axle will spin in a hub when you are giving it gas.
A bad bearing is more likely to make noise at a certain speed.
Do you also hear this sound when you quickly accelerate away from a stop?

its hard to tell when exactly it starts making noise. ive got side pipes and headers too loud. did notice today if i push on my brakes when its making noise the sound goes away. And with the jeep on the ground if i push at the top of the tire i can feel the wheel move like its loose. its parked till i can get all the parts and tools together.

It's starting to sound like a bearing. But you have to pull the hub to change the bearing so...

ok. i marked the nut, washer and the hub with some paint. spun the tires in the grass and my marks are no longer lined up. im 100% sure its the axle splines now. my question is if its the axle can the hub be reused? if so other than the axle what will i need to fix this. im on a tight budget and want to do it right with spending as little as possible. thanks

do the math, don't forget to include the machine shop time and bearings. I would not even think about replacing with one two piece axle. but I didn't just get laid off. tuff call.:dunno:

is it the driver or passanger side? Never mind I just noticed you have a narrow trak.

I'm putting my chips on the bad bearing scenario, if the hub was spun you would not get to 40mph and then have it start spinning.
Does it continue to accelerate forward while making the noise?
Try and take off with the park brake on, breifly of course

To follow on Old Dog's thought :D, I have a driver side NT axle if it comes to that. Cost of shipping only.
The pass side became a science project so it's no more.;)

thanks all. it still moves because the pass side does all the pulling. if i accelerate hard from a take off the axle spins faster than the hub on the drivers side. i can get a new axle kit off ebay for 100. hub and axle plus hardware. its gonna be a little over a month unless something changes finacially before i can order the parts. im gonna pull the hub to be sure but from what i can see its def spun. ill post back what i find when i get it apart. again thak you all.

and sasquach i apreciate the offer. i think by the time i pay shipping and buy new seals and bearings it wouldnt be worth it. thanks again for the offer. hope to be able to pay it forward in the near future.

Your call but it does have a good when removed bearing on it.
Does the Ebay axle kit come with the hub? you would not want to put your hub on a new axle, the damaged splines would exist in the hub as much as your axle.

Just a thought I have never tried this but what if you weld the two togeather? It might get you by until you can fix it right. Like I said it is just a thought maybe someone knows why this is a bad idea.

Ok so someone showed why this is a bad idea :notworthy: I was just trying to help a guy out that is short on funds.

This might be the one time it does make some sense, untill the money comes.
Am I recomending it? No ;)
