amc 20 axle question

amc 20 axle question
im finding most 2 peice axles for sale are 26.25 to 26 5/16 all ive read says to measure from diff points on an axle.

IMHO, putting anything but 1 piece shafts in your 20 is throwing money down a hole. You can get the Crown solid axle kit for $200 and get everything you need for the swap and be done with it.

Did you read the entire thread? $ is tight and parts are being donated so he's only out some shipping expense to get his dd back. My CJ had 78K on it and the axles look as good as new, no it was not running big tires and beat on afaik. I think $25-30 in shipping cost is a fair gamble in his case.

This is my OPINION- I am not forcing anyone to take it. The way I am looking at it is how many times do you want to pay for seals, gear oil, grease, shipping, or any other thing you may bugger up while making it work for now? You may be 1\3 of the way to what you really want. I don't know how much money I would have saved if someone had told me to lay back, wait, and do what you really want rather than throwing something together. I did read the thread, I know money is tight, and I know he also has another vehicle. This is my opinion, and afaik, this is a forum where you ask the advice of many, and use your judgement to make the proper decision. I am not trying to step on your d*ck, just giving my opinion, take it or leave it.

i apreciate anyones opinion. right now 50 bucks is alot easier to squeeze than 200. i just got a new job a couple weeks ago and its about half what i used to make. and my spare car is wore out and gets around 8-10 mpgs where the jeep is 18 to 20. in the future i def plan on doing one peice axles but now its not possible. btw what does afaik mean? as far as i know? i was lost on that one.

Yep, you got it,- and sorry if I got a bit snarky, itss 6 am and I just got off work-

so today i got a friend of mine to tack the nut to the axle after we tightened the nut on it. it was very loose. all this is just temp till i get the replacment axle in. my wheel wobble that i thought was a bent rim is now gone but the noise is still there and i noticed if i apply the brake the noise would go away. so i pulled the drum and found the parking brake strut spring is broken and the strut has been rubbing the back of the hub to the point it has cut a groove in both. would the broken spring cause this and can i get a new spring? thanks

If the hub is wobbling at all on the axle or not true then the brake drum that is mounted to the hub will be not running true around the fixed in place brake baking plate and brake shoes. Problems will be created

Also tack welding the nut prevents the nut from turning but that never was the problem. To prevent the hub from turning on the alxe shaft you would need to weld the axle to the hub. Since the nut is welded I guess you could try welding the nut to the hub.
But that wouldn't fix the brake issue Sasquach was talking about.

that makes since. hopefully the new axle and hub will take care of it.
By the way I found the 2 peices of axle that I had cut up and when put back together are longer than the complete axle and thus the pass side.
There is now no doubt in my mind that I have a driver side for you.

and busa we tacked the hub, nut and washer to the axle shaft. seems ok for now. only gonna be under light daily use for a couple weeks.

did you ever need a another AMC20 rear end? i have one from a 1980 and really don't need it at all.

I'm EXTEMELY happy I looked in on the forum today! I took my CJ out for a spin to check for leaks on the new AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , AND LOW and BEHOLD I heard that clunking grinding sound coming from the rear AMC model 20 I was going up a slight incline on hard packed earth/ crush and run a little tire spin then the noise. Heard it again on the way home when I accelrated from a stop on a slight incline. I kinda figured its what was going on but after readin the last 8 pages I'm pretty sure thats my issue. I'll be looking at the diff this afternoon and looking for one piece axelsright after Thanks for all the info
