AMC 20 one piece install

I have the ring gear and pin being installed. I took a look at the axle should be straight forward. Leave 20-60 tho of bearing past the axle housing. What is the proper way to check for the amount of shims to go back in on one side?

If you are using a one piece axle like Moser you don't use the shims that were used with the two piece set up. There is a thick spacer that is used to set the bearing preload. I can't say for other brands, but the directions with the Moser kit explains the set up pretty good.

Ok so why the is the bearing 20-80 tho sticking out from the axle housing? Would this not keep the backing plate from bolting up.

That is what sets the bearing preload. So it is a bit of trial and error to set. I think I ended up at about .050. So I had to file down that spacer a little bit. With the spacer sticking out that small amount, and you bolt the backing plate up it will preload the bearing and still bolt up flush. If it won't bolt up flush then you have to file a little more off the spacer. I originally set this up 7 years ago, I think I used a grinder to lightly grind that spacer, so it was flat. I have since changed out the bearings and seals, because of leaking seals. I have never had bearing problems. I reused the original spacer each time so I didn't have to do the set up each time. They send you new spacers in the bearing kits. The seals would get chewed up from sand and mud getting in there from wheeling.

In my hast I did not realize that it was a taper bearing. I was expecting a bearing that you would see on a trailer axle. Thanks for the info purple77cj7.
