I have an extra gauge hole in my dash and was thinking about putting a vacuum gauge there, any opinions on this?

I have heard of in the past being able to tune your vehicle for better gas mileage using a vacuum gauge.

two points, the vacuum gauge is a cool thing when you learn how to use it and make the effort to use it. And there are a very Limited number of gauges that will fit in that hole in the dash, left of the wheel. I think it was originally a clock. Now that would be useless, A clock? in a Jeep CJ? whats the point in that?:D

I agree with what IO states about a clock in a CJ, I would suggest a tach, if you don't already have one.

do you have one new hole or two?

I had two, the right of the wheel was for a tachometer and the left for the clock.

You may find that the gauges that will fit these two holes are a bit Limited . they are odd size holes for most gauges.

The first one would be cool. If you watched it and tried to keep it in the green it would help your gas milage. Is that why you are thinking about this or you just trying to plug a hole.

Blocking the hole is nice but I am looking more at function.

Yes, I think it was Old Dog that had an excellent link to a page that showed how to tune you engine with a vacuum gauge. I downloaded the info. If he doesn't chime in I will up load it or find the link myself.

Thanks busa, that would be helpful.

I dont have either of those holes but the PO drilled a new one above the temp and oil pressure gauges. Looking at running one of these:

OLD DASH INSTRUMENT 2 5/8 GREENLINE VACUUM GAUGE HOT ROD GASSER SCTA NHRA RAT | eBay

AMC Jeep Eagle CJ Vacuum gauge vacum CJ5 CJ7 | eBay

Tin Medic,
Don't know if it matters to you or not, but you can buy a brand new autometer vac gauge for less than either of those.

Auto Meter 2337 Auto Meter Autogage Gauges

BusaDave9,
Great info! That stuff is getting saved, thanks!

I opted to put a vac gauge in my dash as I moved the oil pressure gauge up to where the clock was (actually other side as I swapped the tach right to left). Still learning my way around these motors. Is this a suitable place to plumb the vacuum gauge?
Yes, that is ok. The only place you do not run the gauge is ported carb. and that as shown is manifold vacuum.

Awesome - thanks for the sanity check. Now to find an adapter that will fit that threaded location and convert to the 1/8 NPT fitting on the gauge sending unit
