Are these Manuals The Same ?

I have read folks suggesting that a Field Service Manual ( FSM ) would be a big benefit to anyone working on CJ's.
I have been looking for it/them for the last few days with no luck. I need it for a 1978 CJ7 .

I continue to come across 3 volume sets of Technical Service Manuals."Jeep : 1978 Technical Service Manual (Volume 3 Body) "

Are these what some call the FSM or a different animal all together ??

More than likely that is what you are seeking, although I've never seen three volume sets. Most commonly they are single books about the size of an old Sears xmas catalog. Got a photo of the cover?

they are available as reprints, kind of like a big book copied both sides on a copier. About $75 usually. check e bay.

And that is "factory service manual".

Actually the 1978 Jeep Technical Service Manual was originally printed in in three volumes; Drive Train, Body, and Electrical. (Not sure which volume was which topic off hand.) It was the only year I remember it being done.

Its a TSM (Technical Service Manual). 1978 was the only year where the TSM came in 3 volumes, I have an original set in the garage.

If you are willing to buy volumes separately you can get all 3 pretty cheap. I'm into mine for about 35 dollars and they are in great shape (ebay).

I guess I am not being clear in the wording of my question.

Is the TSM and the FSM the same thing ? Or are they 2 different manuals ?

that is where the confusion lies
"technical service manual" or "factory service manual" are common names used for the factory approved service manuals sold by the manufacturer.

You're sure right on it causing confusion. I read people always saying to get a FSM or referring to FSM. Never was it being called TSM.

Went on a search to get one and guess what. No FSM listed,just TSM's.
Well,I found the 3 volume TSM for 1978 a few days ago. $49.30 including shipping.

I was wanting to be sure I got the right stuff and there wasn't another one to get lurking in the shadows.

Ya know what, the 1981 and the 1977 both refer to themselves as "Technical service manual".

I think the term is used primarily to distinguish between a factory authorized mechanics manual and a Haynes or Chilton's.

You paid $45 for the three volume set. Is it bound or a reprint?

That is a pretty good price, I think mine were both about $75, but it has been a while and I have slept.

Yep,it's an original bound set.Found the set on Amazon,$45.30. It's used but in good condition. I'm fine with used.
Heck,I bought my '78 used in '80 and it's been just fine.

When I was in the Grunts, some manuals used the term.

Turbogus would be correct. The "Field Service Manual" term more than likely refers to military instruction manuals, which wouldn't apply to CJs. The old MBs, maybe.
