Changed the title over to my right hand drive postal Jeep this morning. Couldn't get tags without insurance. Can't get insurance! They're telling me that any vehicle that is right hand drive is considered a "commercial" vehicle and therefore I must have "commercial" insurance...which is 5 times the cost!!!!!

I am so, so mad! I have no intention of "commercially" using this vehicle. I really don't intend to drive it that often...but would like to drive it just the same.

The vehicle is titled as a "sport utility" and yet the insurance says "commercial".

What can I do? Anybody...please...this just can't be.

Thanks

Man, that stinks. Have you checked with other insurance carriers? It seems strange that they would classify all right hand drive vehichles as commercial. I have seen a lot of hondas driving around town that are right hand vehicles also. I guess people are getting them shipped over here because they are faster or something like that. Either way, I cant imagine they are considered commercial vehicles.

I agree that you should shop around. I have seen right hand cars on the roads here in MI, so know you can get plates here. Not sure the rules in your state.

Good luck

x2 with checking with another insurance company... In the past I've had to go directly to the state insurance commisioners office to get "out of the ordinary" questions answered. If what you were told by your company is found to be incorrect/ inaccurate, they should intervene on your behalf. Good luck!!

I didn't have any problem insuring my Postal Jeep...

Maybe if you put "Not For Hire" on the rear bumper, they would grant an exemption?

I GOT IT!! Turns out...my "insurance company" was really a broker (which means over 1/3 of my money was going to them...)

GEICO!!! was more than happy to insure my Jeep (non commercial) with a better policy and at a cheaper rate. Of course, this was just for the one vehicle...they "assure me that adding additional vehicles will lower rates as well".

Either way, I now have a PERSONAL policy on my postal Jeep and no worries of commercial or any other B.S. Not to mention the low monthly payment and NO down payment for the policy. Maybe "switching to GEICO really can svae you 15% in 15 minutes or less"?!?!...

So far...I'm sold! Right hand drive 1975 DJ-5 Postal Jeep...$25.83 monthly! Not too shabby! So long to 15 years with the crooks I've been dealing with! Thanks for the replies.

If anybody ever needs any help tagging/titling/insuring an old postal Jeep...lemme know. I just received my Bachelors in B.S.!!
