yeah i basically dont know much about much when it comes to jeeps, but as i go im learning, curious. whats a good differential to hav in gears, its mostly gonna be used for off roading, but i will have to drive on the street to get to the location or somewhere near by in town. about 20 miles away.

Are you trying to figure gear ratio, or are asking about third members?

I think were are talking diff gears here...

We need to know tire size, engine, Transmission , Transfer Case and exactly what you consider 'mostly off-road'...

Some people say mostly off-road and they mean 10 percent in the dirt... What is your realistic off-road (and what terrain) percentage?

We want to help you build and use the best CJ you can have.. :)

Knowing the powerband of your engine is a big help. This Chart shows RPM at 65 MPH.gear_ratio.gif

oh man you guys are to hi-tech for me.. haha, okay , well its a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , straight 6. i thinking of going with a 4 inch sky jacker lift, then gettin at least 33 in tires. one day id like to do the SOA, but for now i wont. hmmm . Yes im talking about the ratio. what else, oh yeah, well i havent been able to use much of it off roading. I have another car, that i use when home, since i travel. so lets say 40 % off roading, im thinking even more than that one day. the off roading ill probably be doing, is going on trail runs, but i eventually want to learn to rock crawl.

also, sorry if its frustrating when i dont give much detail. Like i said i dont know much about jeeps, YET. But i do have an image of where id like to be with it one day.

If you are planing to rock crawl. Plan on some major upgrading to your rig. What Transmission mission are you running ?

i think my jeep is pretty much all default (stock)

What year model? Is she a CJ5 ,6,7,8? 3Speed4Speed,5Speed? Stick or Auto?

shes an 84, CJ7 , 5 speed-stick.

Since you have O/D I'd go minimum of 4.56. If your going rock crawling I suggest adding a locker at least in the rear When you change gears. If you plan on keeping the stock rear axle. You need to weld the tubes to the center section & add flanged axle shafts

what kind of axles would i need to upgrade too if i didnt weld??? hmm minimum of 4.56 does that mean a lower number be better, and the higher be worst. i have a cousin that runs a 4.10 on his truck, does that help me if i take that route?? add one locker??

also is that suppose to be an image you sent??

Man I have no clue what happened to the end of that post. The higher number is usually better offroad. I personally think any money spent on a AMC model 20 rearend a waste. I would look into a Dana 44 as a minimum. If you get serious a 9"Ford or a Dana60.

i really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. im just trying to learn as much as i can, ill even go in to random post and just read up on what people have to say on things and asorb that.

...but your saying it is wise for me to go to a Dana 44 or 60 right??

i noticed were both from TX whoooo .. lol:chug:
anyways i was looking on craigs list right now.. this one guy is selling both front and rear axle of Dana 44 for 200 dollars.. but the gear on it is 3.73 :/

It's all personal preference. I run front & rear Detroit locked Dana 60's. It's not the cheapest solution to the problem, but I was tired of breaking parts. I also got a smoking deal on a pair of military rebuilt axles. also the 5-speed Jeep installed is marginal for rock crawling. The factory Transfer Case on the other hand is one of the best. There is a reason they say "Real Jeeps are Built Not Bought".:D

what are they out of? Yeah same state, but 800 miles & a time zone away. Ya gotta love Texas!:chug:

OH man so you kinda lost me lol... your saying the 5 speed isnt really good for rock crawling?? is it even possible to change that up.hmmm. is there a book .. jeep rock crawling for dummies i can buy lol

im astounded by how much alot of you know.. praises to alll
waynes world " were not worthy" :notworthy:

this was his posting on craigslist...

I have a matching set of front and rear Dana 44 from a jeep wagoneer with 3.73 gears. The front is disasembled and ready for a rebuld but does include the axel shafts and carrier, It is a non vacume disco and is a passanger side drop. The rear is asembled and is a driverside offset. would be greaat for a sas or for some kind of 4x4 project These axels also swap in to some years of cj call me and i can help you out

wish i knew what everything meant on that post.. haha

35 odd years of tearing up & fixing Jeeps. From 1945 Mb-1988 Wrangler. Yes, you can swap the Transmission . I like a Granny gear Transmission like A BorgWarner Gear T-18 ,T-19 or even T-98 with 6.32 low gear fro crawling. They are easily adapted to your Transfer Case with an adapter from Novak or Advanced adapter. Glad to help another Jeeper along the money trail of broken parts.
