Overhauling wide track dana 30 and Amc 20 axles
I prefer the older cj's 76-79.Came with v8's or heavy duty transmissions. Not punished with controlled computer 
or emissions. Sure the wide tracks were nice ( which i have 2 sets for my 78 ) but the 5 speeds and higher gear ratios and computers took the grunt away. But with all cj's we take goodies from everywhere and stuff them in ours to take it to the next level. Jeep. Just Enough Essential Parts.

Always Off-Roading Jeeper
I personally like the -8s for the longer wheelbase. Better for the ride and they seen to have better control in the steep hills going up or down. The problems faced with driveline angles when modifying suspensions are there, but I would think better to work with due to the wheelbase again. There are other good items to have also that come with the later models like the Transfer Case , wide trac, and auto Transmission . Theres always a bit of give and take like being more complicated than the older Jeeps, the T-5 Transmission and squeezing thru the tight spots to name a few.

- 1980 cj5 258ci straight 6, 31x10.50's. Partial Teamrush iginition upgrade, MC 2150 Carb. 4.0 head swap, factory header. I call him "Eugene".
Dad's jeep when he raced in the 70's. Cj2 running gear, ford 300 cu in 6 cyl with 3 deuces. Fiberglass model T body and hand laid fiberglass hood. welded 5.38 gears and beer keg fuel tank. see avatar
