Best cj

I'll take my CJ5 any day. but i'm old school. :)

I though it was pretty much written in stone that my Jeep was the best Jeep in all the land, and therefore it's the 1982 CJ7 , to answer the initial question. :)
Pa, the O.P. also wanted to know why and what land. I don't mean to be the post manager, but just curious.

Seems most are in the 72' to 86' camp. I'm old school myself and don't like computer controlled anything on my ride. I feel it's much easier to repair. So i like 72' through 81'. I feel my 99' silverado is the worst thing i've ever owned and it's the newest. i've had stuff fail on the 99' that is still going strong on the older ones. i really don't like actuators or encoder motors to control the 4x4. Nothing but trouble if you ask me.

The land between my ears. My wife said I'm hardheaded so I figured it must be stone, right!

I couldn't pick just one year CJ cause I like characteristics from different years. I like the 82 because it's the last year before the computer and the first year of the wide tracks. I like the later 86's due to the rear wt 44 axle. And I like some earlier years parts like the T-18 and T-176 tranny's.
And if I had to pick another CJ to own it would probably be a Scrambler.

If I were looking for the best stock Cj to roll off the line I can probably narrow it down pretty good. Id take a late 1982 Scrambler. No computer , wide trac axles , T-176 with the Dana 300 Transfer Case and the extra wheelbase that the Scrambler has to offer. Strange thing is I had this exact Cj and sold it. :o

The only drawback is you usually get pathetic 2.72 gearing , two piece axles and the rear overhang hurts your departure angle.

Second favorite would have to be a CJ6 with the AMC 304 / T-18 and Dana 20 . You also can get a Dana 44 rear with them. You get some added wheelbase without the rear overhang and a nice stout drivetrain.

Drawbacks for that are the narrow trac axles , and the Dana 20 isnt geared low enough for my tastes. The T-18 can negate most of that though.

Honestly every year Jeep has its advantages and disadvantages. Thats why most of us take bits and pieces and make our own.

Since the op didn't ask if it was a stock cj or not. My favorite jeeps are the wide track scramblers. I have wanted one for twenty years and I am now building one to my specs. My all time favorite is a CJ3a any year with a v6 odd fire swapped in and small 31 inch tires and very little lift. Like everyone said its a give and take. I love the later CJs but I don't like any part of the drivetrain other than the Transfer Case .
