got my new sending unit in the mail today and it came with a rubber ring ...well my old sending unit did not have the rubber ring on it..and i tried to use the ring but it wouldnt allow the nut to fit..do i need this rubber ring??

Are we talking about the fuel level sending unit ? And how much rust is there where the rubber gasket would sit ? Has the defoliation of steel taken up some of the room where the gasket would sit ? Was rust the only seal keeping fuel from splashing past the sending unit ?

I dont think Ive ever removed a sending unit on any brand of car or truck that didn't have a seal. And yes, it should have a seal. Sometimes they are a PIA to get them compressed, and then get the ring started, are you using any lube on the rubber ?

What sending unit?
Oil sending unit?
Fuel sending unit?
Coolant sending unit?

fuel sending unit... no rust on there.. 1976 jeep cj 15 gal tank..does the sending unit go in and then the seal on top then the lock ring?

The seal goes down first, sending unit sits on top of the seal, then the lock ring on top. Use a light "oil" when putting it together, it helps the ring get started and turn to tighten easier.

It's been awhile but I remember a depression in the tank where the o ring sits then the sender goes on top of that and then the lock ring. The ring will need to be pushed and then turned to compress the seal.
