The brake pedal on my '78 CJ7 sits a few inches higher than the clutch pedal, which sits at a comfortable and functional position. I'm 6'5 and when the Transmission is in 1st gear (3-speed manual), there is not enough room between the gear shift lever and the steering wheel for my leg to fit so I can't raise my leg far enough to hit the brake pedal with my right foot. I don't see an obvious way to adjust the pedal from the pedal assembly. Can it be adjusted from the master cylinder (manual brakes...no booster) with a different push rod?

I can offer no help, but am going to keep an eye on this..... my brake pedal sits way lower than my clutch pedal. I'd like to raise mine...... wonder if we can use the same fix?

Maybe we should trade LOL

Shum if you have a fiberglass body that could be the reason for the lower brake pedal because the firewall is thicker and make the master cylinder sit slightly further away from the pedal assembly.

You might check on adjusting the brake light switch to lower the pedal height. More room can be obtained by moving the seat mounting holes back a bit. Aftermarket seats Like the Bestop Trailmax II with adjustable back can give a bit more room on the top side.
 
Why not add tilt steering, lower the seat frame, and notch the wellwheel?
I’m 6’2” and I did this to my 3b and I have plenty of room.

That sounds way more complicated than heating the lever and bending it toward the toe board, which is what I'm going to do if it cannot be adjusted at the MC. :)
 
You would have to attack this on two fronts. First you need to find a way to adjust the pedal stop to lower the height of the pedal in a resting position. Next you need to shorten the brake rod to allow the master cylinder's piston to retract far enough to release the hydraulic pressure in the system. I made this mistake. With a motorcycle pedal. The brakes got so hot it boiled the brake fluid.

Another very radical solution it to either bend the pedal arm using heat or cut it and weld the pedal to a lower position. Not easy, the pedal can become VERY brittle.
 
My solution came from a combination of Torxhead's and Hedgehog's comments. Shortening the MC push rod was easy enough, and allowed the pedal to rest lower, but the brake lever spring had just enough tension to keep it from resting against the rod. My primary concern with doing this was the pedal popping up far enough to allow the push rod to fall out of the MC. After a bit of studying the movement of the lever, I realized a PO had bent the brake light switch tab up, probably to account for a MC replacement with a push rod that was too long. I bent it back into place, and now it keeps the pedal from coming too far up. I appreciate everyone's input.
