Brake Rotor Removal w/ Locking Hubs...or "How do I get this dang thing off?!"

So, following this forum's advice, I'm trying to work my brakes back into order. Jacked it up and removed everything to the point seen in the following photo.

attachment.php

BTW I have locking hubs. Neither the Jeep service manual nor the Chilton's manual give any more detail than, "remove this and that and the other thing (at least as I read them) and then pry the thing off."

So I need help. Experienced folks, please take a look at the photo closely and tell me what I have left to do to get the rotor off and take it to the zone and get it turned. I also want to pack the bearings and restore the splash guard back there.

Thanks in advance!

Chilton and Haynes are junk!
You need a real FSM.
You must remove the 2 large hex nuts(one behind the other)you see inside the hub.

I can see someone used a screw driver and hammer to install the lock nut
Use the correct tool (2 1/16"socket), you can find it at your local parts store.
Spindle Nut Socket: 1/2 Drive - A692N
Looks like your doing a good job so far.

This book, is worth every penny! It has great pictures with very good write-ups, I used it when I changed my front brakes and bearings.

Heck, order the spindle nut socket and new nuts and washers too, they'll all show up together, I honestly doubt you're local parts places carry them, none of mine ever have.

Nut'n beats the real FSM, MR-252.

I've got that one on PDF, In the brake section the instructions aren't very clear on this part, but I'm sure it's somewhere else. So hard to find it on PDF when it isn't "searchable" so I'll be ordering the hard copy. I'll get one of each. For the cost, I'm sure they'll all be worth it.

Thanks for all the help. Local shop didn't have the 2 1/16" socket, but I can get it quick off the net. Next time I'll be carefully planning before I dive in on something. This is supposed to be my daily driver, and if I'm not careful I can see it being on jack stands more than the road.

Re: Brake Rotor Removal w/ Locking Hubs...or "How do I get this dang thing off?!"

Be sure to read on how to set the bearing pre-load.
What I do is this-Tighten the inner nut down good and tight to set the bearings and races. Spin the rotor 5-6 times. Then back off that nut 1/2-3/4 turn and then snug down by hand on the socket. No wrench, etc.
Install tab washer and bent a tab over the inner nut.
Install outer nut and torque to 50 ft/lbs. Then bend tabs over this outer nut.
Use sealer on the hub and torque hub bolts to 30 ft/lbs. CK hub for engagement and release of axle.

I'd have to check to be sure but I think mines a 2 5/16", so maybe that was a typo?

Re: Brake Rotor Removal w/ Locking Hubs...or "How do I get this dang thing off?!"

Mine is 2 1/8".

Re: Brake Rotor Removal w/ Locking Hubs...or "How do I get this dang thing off?!"

It all depends on who is selling the tool, some say 1/16" others 1/8", yet others say one socket will remove both 2 1/16" and 2 1/8" nuts. It's made in china.....

Re: Brake Rotor Removal w/ Locking Hubs...or "How do I get this dang thing off?!"

Errrrrrrr don't yeah hate it!!!!! I had a nice little write up on what he needed to do and at the very end my key board screwed up, i's a wireless and from time to time will go wild on one letter, and I lost it. Errrrrrrr frustrating.
Sorry guy I did try but can't prove it.

Do get the socket, this is a chore you'll do over and over again and the socket will pay for itself. A socket and decent snap ring pliers.

I forgot to check. Could just be my memory, ain't what it used to be. Maybe it was a 1 5/16" socket I needed for something, I just recall a "5/16"! Might have been the ball joint nut.

5/16" is real close to 1/4" inch--
Ball joint nut is MUCH bigger than that.

Dana 30 BJ nut is 1 5/16".
Just did one yesterday.

Side note: depending on the nut thickness could be 1 3/8', a 1/16" larger.

Your 1 1/8" BJ nut shoots down your "MUCH bigger" then 1 5/16" theory. :D
