Looking for a cj
I have been looking for a CJ5 for a while now and might have found one. I am going to look at a 78 CJ5 with a plow on the front. The guy said it has new exhaust and breaks have been redone.

What problems should I look for before buying?

There is a 74 CJ5 for sale that has a running motor but body and frame is shot. Would buying it as a parts jeep work or do the 74 and 78 not match up for replacement parts?

Thanks for any help you can give.

The drive train will pretty well swap over, but the body and frame have differences.

I'd look the frame over on the plow Jeep real close. they tend to drive them hard and put them away wet, and the frame takes most of the damage. Look for cracks around the mounts and the frame horns. Also the breaks (I know they have been re-done. But look anyways)
Also the front springs will have taken a beating, look at them pretty good.

the '74 may have a Dana 44 in the rear that will swap in. But the front Model 30 in the '78 may have disc brakes, so its better.

Jeeps used to plow take a huge beating. I would look to make sure the frame isn't bent. Also, go through he gears...the tranny has been beat to death...jeeps are light and snow gets heavy...I plow with a 81 Chevy PU with railroad ties in the rear and during a big storm or right after it is tough work.

Better you than me Alpha6!

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.
