My son removed this part from the inside fender when I wasn't watching and I'm having trouble identifying it, and moreover how do I know if it's any good or working or should it be replaced? Relay switch?
Thanks in advance

Looks like the main computer. Never heard Cj's to have them under the fender though...

I did pull a different part that was much larger, about the size of the jeep radio off of the firewall that I thought was the main computer.
this was on the drivers side fender, and is about the size of a cd case, but thicker.

That is you ignition control module basicl a ford duraspark blue grommet box should have been mounted drivers side on the inner fender

Thanks... any idea of what I should replace it with? or should I replace it?

get an electronic distributor, run a hot wire to it and throw that box away

Davis unified ignition (DUI) makes a good product for around 300 dollars
Skip white performance has one for around 50 dollars
Or make your own 77 nova 250 6 cyl hei dist. And a dist gear From a AMC 304
But for 50 bucks some guys have had pretty good luck with the skip white part.

Or junk yard an hei module and a ford e-core coil from a 90ish ford and use your dizzys mag pickup to trigger it all

As stated, that is your ignition control module, aka the Ford duraspark module. That sends the timing signal to your distributor. The problem is that those specific ICMs are prone to failure, I've gone through three in one year before. The good, they're cheap to replace, and most big box parts store carry them.

You have a few options if you do want to replace it, MSD box, or something similar (I use a Summit Racing brand), or you can go the HEI single wire way. There have been lengthy discussions on this forum debating the merits of either, a quick search of this site will give you TONS of reading options. In the end, it really comes down to personal preference.
