I am new to the site and am having an issue I hope someone can assist me with. I am trying to pull my 258ci out of my 1978 CJ5 . I have removed to four bolts that hold the block to the bellhousing and removed the 2 clutch linkage bolts. I don't see anything else holding that block to the bellhousing, I have a jack up under the tranny to keep it from nose diving, I have the block attached to the engine hoist. For the life of me they will not come apart, am I missing something's here? Thank you for any help.😤😤😤

You still have bolts somewhere. There are two at the very top of the bellhousing.

Removed those two. I only saw 4 total bolts, are there more I'm missing? In the past I have had not had this problem, this is the first time pulling an engine on a CJ. How difficult should it be to separate the two? Pry bar? Or just pull back on the hoist?

There are bolts coming in from the front that bolt the metal plate (between the engine and Transmission ) to the bellhousing. There are also bolts on the bottom that do the same.

My bad, I went and looked again and I miss spoke. I have removes 6 bolts from the block and tranny also have removed the inspection plate and all bolts from the plate. The clutch and flywheel stay with the block right? I am just perplexed here.

Yep, flywheel is bolted to the crank, clutch bolted to the flywheel. This is why you need the Transmission and Transfer Case in gear when you put it back together. You need to be able to turn the tranny input shaft to line up with the clutch splines.

Ok, so I put the clutch linkage back on and stepped on the clutch and that freed the block from the pegs. Now it's like something is holding it on the tranny output shaft. Is there something else I'm missing? Again it is away from the bellhousing now I just can get it off the output shaft. Thanks again for all your help

You are talking about the Transmission input shaft. The output shaft is what goes to the Transfer Case .

That being said, your input shaft is binding up on the pilot bearing. Your engine Transmission combo is sagging in the middle. You need a jack under the front of the Transmission and lift it while you lift the engine. The engine and Transmission have to always be straight with each other.

Sorry misspoke, I meant the input shaft. Thanks for the correction.
