I have a 79 CJ7 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and 2bbl Carter Carb.

When fully warmed up the engine idles fine and preforms acceptably. Cold starts are okay as well.

Here's the issue: When first started (pedal pressed to the floor once or twice then completely released before cranking engine until it fires), the motor fires up and runs fine on fast idle. After the rpm's increase a good bit (don't have a tach to get a number), if the throttle is touched, it jumps all the way off fast idle and will die if the gas pedal isn't feathered to keep it running. It never goes to the second step of the fast idle cam, it just comes completely off the fast idle cam and goes to the curb idle.

I don't have much knowledge of carburetors, and read a good bit just to have enough knowledge to ask this question. Through all the reading I did about chokes (mine is automatic, not manual) I never found an answer to this particular problem.

Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong in the start procedure? Should I adjust the fast idle speed with the screw to keep the rpm lower so that it can warm up more before touching the throttle? ???

It's the choke setting/fast idle cam you need to learn how to adjust.
You would really do well to buy a copy of the real factory service manual.

Not a hard adjustment to do-EASY to mess up.
