CB Radios for trails

CB Radios for trails
hole - Johnny Horton was a late '50's brilliant singer with a distinctive rockabilly voice, but like Buddy Holley, the Big Bopper, Rickey Valance (plane crash), he died way to young in an automobile accident. "Battle of New Orleans", "Sink the Bismarck", "North to Alaska" and a few others I can't think of right now are songs that should never be forgotten. A true flash of brilliance. Hit youtube and you will understand.

"Battle of New Orleans", One of my favorite songs. In fact got it on my iPod. Love the idea of using a gator as a canon!

HH, I gave you tube a whirl.I'm more of a Slipknot kinda guy than C&W music, so I'm sure thats why I'd never heard of him before. As you say, interesting voice though.

...Dr. Stranglove, man that's one of my favorite films and "Buckie will be right back there sooner than you can say "Blast Off" :p

"...to hell with the mongoloid Russians":patriot: in the distinctive growling voice of George C. Scott

I'm gonna bet Hedge isn't much of a Slipknot fan.:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Not sure what a Slipknot is, other than a version of a hangman's noose. My guess is it has something to do with the modern version of music.

Hey Peter-You sure it's a good idea to subject an old fart like HH to this modern music. :D

All this talk of CB radios I figured I should post pics of what I'm up too.

I've had this radio sitting on a shelf for a while, haven't taken the time to mess with it.

The PO had cut out the stock dash radio hole to fit your standard aftermarket CD player stereo in that hole, but it never fit right, it completely crushed the defroster vent duct. So, I moved it to the Tuffy Center console years ago. And I've just had this hole in my dash. I had to make that hole slightly larger to accommodate this particular CB. And I had to cut some of the lip on the bottom of the dash, plus cut up 2 different CB mounting brackets to make custom mounting brackets that fit. I'll take some better pics to include pics of the brackets tomorrow, when it isn't dark. Oh yeah, and I plan on using the dash speaker as the external speaker for the CB.

Okay Slipknot - Watched all of it, a simple little show band. Remember I live in the state that Alice Cooper calls home. One of the greatest show bands of all time.

HH, you're a better man than I. Had to turn it off at 0:15 :dung: But, just because I don't like it doesn't mean everybody does. So no hate mail here..........but I hope you brain cells fall back in line after listening to this.:laugh: I grew up in the 60's and 70's so I guess I've got no room to talk. My dad use to tell us to turn that :censored: down!:laugh: Mild compared to this!

CB Radios in CJ's are much like having them in Trucks.......Lots of noise!
If you want to hear you either must have the radio hung from above (off the roll cage or headliner ) that exposes the normally bottom mounted speaker to your ear. Or a correct external speaker like the ones that all the Cops use shown in this link below.........personally I like the CB mounted above where it is easy to access and I still use the external speaker due to its exceptional clarity.
External Speaker (HSN4018)

And as far as the FCC bothering anyone without a license , I've been talking on CB's off & on for over 4 decades......never have any of us ever seen an agent nor seen one stop a mobile........and this goes back to the Good old Days when allot of us in Trucks were pushing a 1000 watts. Have they busted stationery base stations that were exceeding the old 5 watts minimum by a multiple of several hundred watts yes they have........

For the trail a good 11 meter CB radio is a handy tool although I also like the 10 meter amateur band radios also if you can get enough guys with them in there rigs..........the 11 meter CB band @27 MHz is basically line of site.......in and around obstacles maybe a mile without additional power. Elevation for your CB is your friend........tuned properly a CB radio will talk around the World when the atmospheric conditions or skip is correct.

The radio pictured below was built by a company near me that exclusively built business band radios.......this is an 11 meter AM/ Single Side band 23 channel CB radio outfitted with a few extras.........underneath is a small solid state linear amplifier.
This very radio years ago when we were hunting up near 8000 feet in the Sierras talked with a group of adventures in the Australian outback nightly for several days until atmospheric conditions changed..........I still have the QSL card from there station confirming that contact.
