On the driver side of the fire wall, there is a circular metal ring. What goes in there? What is it for?

The charcoal canister mounts there.

+3 Charcoal canister.

What is it’s use? Is it needed? Don’t have one.

Used to capture fuel vapors from the gasoline tank. Part of the emissions devices.

I'm not running one, but it'll be required if you must pass a visual emissions test.

Can't help out on where to get one, or what to use as a replacement.

You can find them on eBay if you want one. J&W has some, but you'll pay premium for them.
